I think I may wait a while before I update my main iMac. I've had the MacBook Pro running the betas for a long time now though, and it seems to play nice with the stuff I use it with.

My main concern in the past was my VPN access, but it's moot now since my VPN software compatible with my workplace is Windows-only these days, so I'm running that on a Win 7 box. Very specific too, as I must run Windows 7 with IE 10. Can't run even IE 11, or any other non-IE browser.

What's the build number for the release version of Yosemite? I'm on the latest public beta and get no option to upgrade.

My build is 14A388b.

I'm on Yosemite GM 3.0 (My build is 14A388a) and don't get the option to upgrade either.

I'm downloading the full installer..

UPDATE: full installer won't let me install finally installing now on my 2009 MBP. Just finished installing on my 2010 iMac.

The free OS updates that Apple does for OS X are pretty nice. I still remember when they charged $130 for incremental updates from 10.1 to 10.2 to 10.3.

Hopefully Apple is never on the rocks again and comes to need revenue from OS X upgrades...

The build is 14A389. On one machine that had the last developer preview showed the final build update in the app store a couple of hours ago. This matches the release build I downloaded from the app store to do a full upgrade from Mavericks on my home machine.

Free OS updates actually make a lot of sense for Apple. For starters, it reduces fragmentation. Developers can use new tools in the code without having to worry about backwards compatibility as much. This is one of the bigger problems with Windows right now.

A lot of Windows apps don't support things like 64-bit, DirectX 11, OpenCL, etc, because Windows XP doesn't. A quarter of PC users are still rocking the 14 year old OS. Of course Microsoft can't afford to give updates out for free, or else it would bankrupt them. Yet the catch-22 is people don't want to pay to upgrade. Especially businesses who may have hundreds of licenses.

The other benefit is baking in planned obsolescence. Which we've seen more in iOS than OS X. Partly also to reduce fragmentation. However, Apple is mainly a hardware company. People will blindly download a free update, see their phone run like molasses, and go buy a new one.

Works fine on my mid-2009 13" C2D MBP as well - GeForce 9400M.

I have the late 2008 Unibody with the 2.0ghz C2D and 9400M. Think I should risk it?

Anyone with 10.10 and a 3rd party SSD? I haven't enabled Trim Enabler yet, and I'm reading mixed reports. Not really an issue I'm sure an update will be released in a bit.

http://www.return1.at/trim-enabler-for-osx/

Code:
sudo cp /System/Library/Extensions/IOAHCIFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/IOAHCIBlockStorage.kext/Contents/MacOS/IOAHCIBlockStorage /System/Library/Extensions/IOAHCIFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/IOAHCIBlockStorage.kext/Contents/MacOS/IOAHCIBlockStorage.original
sudo nvram boot-args="kext-dev-mode=1"
sudo shutdown -r now
sudo perl -pi -e 's|(^\x00{1,20})[^\x00]{9}(\x00{1,20}\x54)|$1\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00$2|sg' /System/Library/Extensions/IOAHCIFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/IOAHCIBlockStorage.kext/Contents/MacOS/IOAHCIBlockStorage
sudo kextcache -m /System/Library/Caches/com.apple.kext.caches/Startup/Extensions.mkext /System/Library/Extensions
sudo touch /System/Library/Extensions/
sudo shutdown -r now

Seems to work OK on my 840 Pro. I tried to download Trim Enabler, but the download wasn't working. Maybe the purchase link worked, but I would rather copy and paste a few lines than pay $10.

I just use Trim Enabler because every .1 update seems to break it. The free version enables Trim just fine for Yosemite it turns out.

Thanks for the link, I've never bothered trying to enable it manually.

Liking Yosemite overall!

Installed on my late 2008 C2D with 9400m and Intel SSD. Trim Enabler worked just fine to apply trim again. I'm glad I got such a future proof laptop! Still runs well with 8GB of ram.

I still say it was the best MacBook, if not one of the best laptops Apple has ever made. I eventually need to upgrade mine to 8GB, though it's very low priority right now.

It's kind of tempting to get the original 13 inch MacBook with the education pricing online at Apple and then buy a 256gb ssd and 8gb of ram as an upgrade. But will the processor last me?

Either that or get the $1400 retina pro with that discount.

The vanilla MBP for $1099 is the 2012 model with the Ivy Bridge i5. It's still a decent computer and will probably last awhile. You can also probably remove the optical drive and swap it for an SSD + HDD setup.

The $1499 retina MBP is certainly better, but you can't upgrade the RAM in them (which is complete BS), and 256GB still isn't that much storage. You'd need an external driver for any archival stuff.

My sister has the pro retina with 128gb ssd. She's in college so for her it's enough space. I most likely would be using it while at home for surfing, dev work for fun to learn stuff, and other things. The 512 gb model is too damn expensive.

I really enjoyed using her computer and I've always liked the build quality. Personally now that Windows 8 is on so many laptops with touch, I don't want a Windows laptop. Windows 8 is fine on my desktop but on a laptop for some reason I can't stand it.

That makes sense then. I use mine for Adobe Creative Suite and Final Cut, so the 120GB SSD fills up fast. Stuff I don't use that often gets loaded onto the 500GB HDD.

I still think the vanilla MBP is the better option due to the RAM issue on the newer ones. I get they want them thin, but I'm not paying $1000+ for a disposable computer.

What's the max ram you can go to in the vanilla Mac? Many sites say 8gb but with the older gen processor do you need more?
