Wow, the kext-signing is really irritating. I get that they really want you to use THEIR SSDs, but come on, all of the modern laptops are unupgrade-able anyway, did they really need to take a metaphorical security sledgehammer to potential upgrades to older ones also? :|

I finally installed Yosemite on my iMac Core i7-870 (2010), and Netflix works fine in Chrome, but not Safari.

Note that Chrome first threw up a message saying:

WidevineCdm was indeed already there, but I updated it and now Netflix works in Chrome (but still not in Safari).

Core i7-870 is 2.93 GHz Lynnfield.
Interesting. I re-installed Silverlight, and I get the impression that Chrome doesn't use it anyway, but now Netflix works on Safari.

In Safari when I'm viewing a video, the HD icon is there, and lights up when HD is playing (which usually requires a short period in SD to buffer HD). Before I installed Silverlight though was a screen telling me to install Silverlight.

In Chrome when I'm viewing a video, there is no HD icon at all, but I do get HD playback (after the initial buffering period). This is the same before and after I installed Silverlight.

Furthermore, when pausing or going back to certain menu screens, in Safari it's just static text, but in Chrome, there are motion animations. For example, when the Netflix text logo is displayed before watching videos, in Safari it just appears, but in Chrome it zooms.

IOW, they seem to be using different code for rendering menus, with slightly different interfaces and slightly different behaviour.

I'd be curious to find out what the interface is like on Safari on a newer machine without Silverlight. None of my Macs are Sandy Bridge or newer.

I have a MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2012, no silverlight, no flash).

Comparing Chrome to Safari, the only difference I am seeing is in Chrome, at the top of the page, there is a large promotion image advertising some show they have on streaming. You can click on arrows on the left and right sides to move through different ads.

That does not appear in Safari. Everything else appears the same to me.

OK thx. So do you get the animated zooming Netflix logo and zooming text? Also you have no HD icon either when a video is playing?

I wonder why they chose to remove the HD icon. That can be useful.

The HD icons are gone both from Chrome and Safari.

I normally use Chrome...sometimes I see the Netflix logo and sometimes I don't. I haven't seen it in Safari but since I am not sure what triggers its appearance I can't tell if it is there or not.

I'm getting the spinning beachball of death occasionally now on Yosemite. WTF. I haven't had this much beachballing with an SSD since Lion or something like that. This is on my 2009 4 GB MacBook pro. SSD is Samsung 840.

I wonder if has anything to do with the lack of TRIM.

I've been getting the beach ball loading icon for a few Web pages with safari. I can still scroll with no lag, but the Web page will not interact unless I wait or refresh. Don't have TRIM enabled either.... corsair force 3 480gb ssd

Time to go back to Mavericks? Idk

You can disable KEXT signing. And I'm pretty sure they don't care whose drives you use since they don't sell aftermarket SSDs.

I've never used TRIM, but things grind to a halt when there's less than 50GB free on my drive.

Finally installed Yosemite in my hackkingtosh drive. Don't have it installed on my main osx ssd drive yet but so far it's a bit more stable. I like the dark layout.

This happens to my hackingtosh drive too after I updated to the latest update in app store. It has something to do with the smbios configuration. I had to change my smbios to imac 14,1 reference and now safari is stable. It would also reload and crash at any YouTube video but does not do it anymore.

You can, but it seems crazy to me that I have to disable kext signing globally to have TRIM on a 3rd party ssd, and it's even sillier that if you don't disable TRIM before resetting pram/nvram, then global kext signing is re-enabled and you can bork a perfectly good OS X install.

Yosemite 10.10.2 is out.

It's supposed to fix the WiFi issues some people are having.

Just a reminder that if you used Trim Enabler, you need to disable it first before you update. I forgot about it and spent 30 min futzing around before I remembered. On the Trim Enabler site there are steps to recover. I had to manually remove it in order to boot.

Good to know. That's another reason I'll stick with my decision not to use TRIM Enabler in Yosemite.
