Hey guys and girls,

I hearby make official statement that Mac OS X Lion is slow.......
I thought it was some super king operating system and I had a lot of hopes for it but it's not all that.

Problem, or Known Issue:

It takes 15~ 25 sec to open a picture file. It doesn't matter... large file small file it's just plain slow. It opens with its Picture Viewer software that came with Mac laptop.

With my Windows 2003 Server PC that is 6 years old, it opens the same picture file in less than 1 sec. Sometimes faster. Even with large pic file it's about 100 times faster than Mac OS X does with the program it came with.

I think the technology is going backwards.... Everything seems to be better made and faster on old products. I wonder if it will take 1 full minute to open a picture with the future Mac OS X Hippo sometime in the year 2024. I am serious. The tech is getting worse.

Are you on a Core 2 Duo Mac?
It's got Intel Core i5. Go look up Macbook Pro on apple site. It will tell you.

It's really slow. It takes anywhere from 15 to 25 sec to open a little picture file this is ridiculous... I think, with my Windows server PC it opens it in 1/2 sec.

Look, I've been saying over and over and over an over that the technology has been going backwards..... Now, if I do "Open With.." firefox browser it opens it much faster. I'm telling ya the software engineers need to work on this thing.

If ou are trolling, good show.

If you are actually serious with your statements, i suggest you run some tests on your computer. 15-25 seconds to open a file is not normal behavior for 10.7

^ I was a little exaggerating on the 25 sec part, but definitely around 15 sec or so. I will either post a video of this or time it with my stopwatch.

And yeah, I am serious. This is not a troll post. I really have issues and want my probs fixed.

The problem is pebkac. Sell your Mac, and go back to Windows, you're clearly not cut out for this world. Save us, and yourself a huge headache, move on.

Don't just resort to exchanging computers instead of trying to identify and resolve the issues yourself. Do you return things a lot, like regularly? That's a bad habit. ()

I'm posting the problem, which could have nothing to do with hardware issue and just because you don't like what you are reading here you want me banned? You are getting personal here... Obviously you have no clue on resolving the problem other than *returning* stuff. Nice going, chief. :hmm:

I'm pretty sure it's the programming issue with Mac OS X Lion's built-in picture viewer. It took a long time to open a picture even when my laptop was brand new, with fresh Mac OS! I have gone through 2- 3 formats and reinstall of OS X Lion in the past and it's the same problem. But if I open it with internet browser like Firefox, it opens immediately. So this is not a hardware failure you new guy.

Btw, I'm on hard drive, not SSD on this Macbook. Don't tell me I gotta upgrade to SSD just to improve picture opening speed by 300%. This is just simple little JPEG file. Any JPEG file!

i once new a man who loved windows computers, so he chose to use windows.

i once new a man who loved apple computers, so he chose to use apples.

I once new a man who loved apple computers, but couldn't afford one, so he uses Windows.

You are the first person i have ever met who loves to use windows, but pays the premium to use apple.

:hmm:

i don't think anyone can help with that.

aside from that, i have never had the issue you are talking about, and i wouldn't know how to fix it, i would take your computer into apple to get fixed/replaced.

preview is a wretched app. it doesn't load slow for me but for some it does. search for and isolate your issue before you go on a forum and blame the whole operating system. did you upgrade to lion from 10.5/6? if that's the case, drop everything and do a clean install, stop using preview and stop believing that everything "just works" with macs. If a company seems adamant about pushing such a preposterous slogan you have to understand that it must be excessively untrue. use Xee for images and adobe reader for pdfs. avoid iLife/iWork or any of the other software suites from apple.

honestly the computers and OS are nice, but any of their bundled software is horrible. the software bundled with iOS is slightly less bad.

Just opened a 230MB JPEG file with preview in 10.7 and it opened in less than 8 seconds.

You must be imagining things. <shrugs>

Can't say I have ever had issues with any of the bundled or additional software from Apple. And I wouldn't put anything by Adobe (other than Flash) onto my Mac if you paid me.

I use Adobe Reader and the Adobe plugins in firefox and chrome on a 10.6.8 yonah macbook with the original 60GB hard drive and pdfs load, scroll, and pan faster in Adobe than Preview, and images load faster in Xee than preview.

Clearly snobs like us operate under strict, but separate standards, and cheez needs to figure out what his own standards are.

This solved my questionRe: Preview Load very slow on lion

I would also like a solution for this issue. Sometimes preview takes 15 seconds to open for me. My macbook pro is only a month old, so I think this is sort of ridiculous.

One thing that may work is to uncheck "Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps" in the General window of System Preferences. I'm not sure how this would cause a problem, since I typically close a window before quitting an app, but it's worth a try I suppose.

Quit Preview.
Go to ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Preview.plist and delete this file.
Then go to ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Preview folder and delete that.
Relaunch Preview.

* Go to your Finder "Go" menu hold the option key to choose "Library"

EDIT: The first launch may be slower because cache needs to rebuild but after that let us know...

It's a mild semi-fix, but it's still not right. I also deleted all the preview.lockfile plist and something preview list as well.

Opening a pic from the desktop should be instant, instead the quickest is like 4 seconds on a new MBP.

Preview seems to auto quit now in Lion which is a pointless gimick behaviour too.

HAHAHA SEE???? See what I mean??? I am not the only one who has this issue. I bolded, underlined, with italic, and increased font size for the critical information. That is EXACTLY the issue I'm having.

No. It's a brand new Macbook Pro that was purchased beginning of new year and came with Mac OS X Lion.

Wow, thanks for the valuable info, unlike the member dawks.

I think I agree with you too. The OS itself seems nice. I have been liking it. And other programs run FAST. I guess I didn't word right when I complained in my thread topic post.

I will try some solutions when I get home... stay tuned

Oh My God.... You worded the best!! I couldn't have said better myself. Yes, as you can see, I have high standard in speed. And like I said I come from server PCs with server OS and tweaked up the ass (sorry for my language) to get top notch performance. So I'm spoiled.()

Stu, alyarb gave really good info. That's exactly what I needed!!!! You shouldn't have put me on ignore so you can see all good contents in the threads!

Like alyarb has suggested, I'm gonna try Xee for opening pictures. I'm not gonna use this built-in picture viewer crap anymore.

As mentioned in my first few posts, it's just a couple of things that I have been having issues with, picture opening speed issue and HD video playback (well, youtube playback also) using a third party video player like MPlayer X. Other things in OS X Lion is fast, like uTorrent, web browser, file copy / transfer, etc.

You know.... I have been trying to get those russian scientists over at elecard.ru to implement Elecard MPEG Player on Mac OSes!! That would be so awesome cause that player is so fast as fuck it's not even funny... super solid, virtually invincible in terms of stability and playback speed. This is one of the reasons why I was trying to make Server 2003 to work on the Macbook..... that way I can have this player installed and I would be flying. But iTunes do not support server 2003.

Generally for any kind of HD video playback on a mac you will really want hardware acceleration to be available, whether it's the radeon you get with the 15+ inch models of the intel HD3000 on the 13". Make sure flash player is updated to 11.x on all your browsers and start out with something like VLC as it is a standard for compatibility and configurability. I'm not in love with VLC and I do not use it in windows but I do use it in OS X and it works well with no GPU acceleration or with intel, nvidia, and AMD decoders.

send me a PM with your email cheez

^ alyarb, yes, Elecard MPEG Player requires Hardware Acceleration in order to function properly for playback. Yeah, I was concerned about hardware acceleration that might not be supported with Mac OS X with my hardware (Intel HD3000). I have 13.3" MBP. But with Windows 2003, it supports it! wee wee. I will email you..

thanks
