I have 3 PC's(XP Home) and 1 Mac(10.3.8) on my network. Everything is all
fine and dandy except one thing.

The Mac will not connect to one of the PCs. It can see it, it lists it in
finder, it can trace route it but for some reason it will not connect. It
just hangs finder and eventually pulls up the message "could not
connect....the alias could not be found..." I can browse the mac from the
same PC fine however. Here's what I've tried.

Scenario 1: In finder, I go to Network in my sidebar. It will lists all my
workgroup PCs. I can connect to two of them perfect but not the 3rd. Finder
gives me the spinning disc for like 2-3 mins and then gives the alias error.

Scenario 2: In finder, I goto "go > connect to server" and enter the IP of
the PC (192.168.0.3). I get a message saying "no response from server"
straight away without any delay. Funnily enough this also happens when I
enter the IPs of the other PCs, even though I can connect to them fine in
the finder interface.

Scenario 3: In Finder I do the same thing but this time enter
"smb://192.168.0.3/share/" and it will give me the login and connect.
However, when finder opens the shared folder it will crash and re-launch
itself.

This morning I read that the problem might be related to the fact that both
the mac and PC had the exact same user login. So I changed the login on the
XP machine and initially this seemed to fix my problem and I could connect
without doing the smb://share/ thing. However, after a reboot on the mac I
cannot connect yet again.

This is driving me mad now. I just don't understand what's going in. The PC
in question is setup basically exactly the same as the other two PCs. I have
turned all firewalls off, all workgroups are set.

Anyone, please shed some light?

I had an issue like this at one stage, but that was with 10.3.3 and trying to use the Network through a Finder window. Connect To Server fixed that problem, and now since I updated to 10.3.4 (currently at 10.3.8), I don't have problems either way. I'm not sure what your issue could be (in my case it had nothing to do with the user name). My mac is connected to a network with 2 WinXP Pro boxes and 1 Server 2k3 box (it was the server that the mac had problems connecting to).
