Nice of the academy to continue to refuse to accept that anything other than a traditional drama can be good. And they continue to make themselves more and more irrelevant to the average movie goer.

In any case, here's the list

The nominees for best picture are "Frost/Nixon," "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," "Milk," "Slumdog Millionaire" and "The Reader."

The nominees for best actor are Sean Penn ("Milk"), Frank Langella ("Frost/Nixon"), Mickey Rourke ("The Wrestler"), Richard Jenkins ("The Visitor") and Brad Pitt ("The Curious Case of Benjamin Button").

The nominees for best actress are Kate Winslet ("The Reader"), Anne Hathaway ("Rachel Getting Married"), Meryl Streep ("Doubt"), Angelina Jolie ("Changeling") and Melissa Leo ("Frozen River").

The nominees for best supporting actor are Heath Ledger ("The Dark Knight"), Josh Brolin ("Milk"), Michael Shannon ("Revolutionary Road"), Robert Downey Jr. ("Tropic Thunder") and Philip Seymour Hoffman ("Doubt").

The nominees for best supporting actress are Penelope Cruz ("Vicky Cristina Barcelona"), Amy Adams ("Doubt"), Viola Davis ("Doubt"), Taraji P. Henson ("The Curious Case of Benjamin Button") and Marisa Tomei ("The Wrestler").

The nominees for best director are David Fincher ("The Curious Case of Benjamin Button"), Danny Boyle ("Slumdog Millionaire"), Gus Van Sant ("Milk"), Ron Howard ("Frost/Nixon") and Stephen Daldry ("The Reader").

The nominees for best animated feature are "WALL-E," "Kung Fu Panda" and "Bolt."

The nominees for best original screenplay are "In Bruges," "WALL-E," "Frozen River," "Milk" and "Happy-Go-Lucky."

The nominees for best adapted screenplay are "Slumdog Millionaire," "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," "Frost/Nixon," "The Reader" and "Doubt."

Dark knight was not that good. Yea if you are a M.Bay type fan then you might think it was great. But in terms of a movie lasting, it will not hold.

Uhh.. I HATE Michael Bay movies (I really wanted to walk out of Transformers I got so annoyed with it), and though Dark Knight was amazing. I really can't see how you can even compare the two.

WTF, they chose a lot of craptastic movies/actors in my opinion.....and ledger got the only nomination, because he was all that was good in the flick.

It got "shafted" because it's no more than a popcorn flick disguised as a serious movie. Why so serious??

And yes, I thought Iron Man was better. Ledger is the only nod TDK should have gotten in any major category. For once I see eye-to-eye with the academy.

Frost/Nixon for Best Movie, Brad Pitt for Best Actor. Regardless, a weak year in movies yet again.

Meryl Streep gets nominated AGAIN as well. That makes 15 or 16 now I think, incredible.

And Slumdog Millionaire... heh... well they always have to throw a crappy, obscure Juno-type movie in there, don't they?

I do not think people 'hated' it...but only found ledger's performance worthwhile.

Exactly.

It was blown way out of proportion due to Ledger, and while a good comic book movie doesn't hold it's own in regards to story and such. Ledger did an amazing fuckin job "would you like to see a magic trick?", and all the other scenes that made him simply amazing.

Frankly TDK was worth watching (and I own it on Blu-ray), but when compared to other films it doesn't hold it's own. Movies like Gladiator that have a great drama/story/plot, but have very strong characters, and tell it's story very well.

I thought it was very well done, and more deserving of an Oscar than Dark Knight. But hey, that's just me (and whoever came up with that list, apparently )..

this. i personally didn't think the movie was that great. don't get me wrong, i liked it, but i didn't htink it was oscar worthy at all.

however, ledger's performance was terrific and deserves all the praise and accolades if he does win.

Exactly. Ledger being nominated was a given, but anything more than that and I would have been very surprised.

Happy to see In Bruges get a nod for screenplay, even though it won't win. I also thought Clint would get a nomination, I thought he was quite good, though maybe he just seemed really good because the rest of the cast was terrible.
