The nominees for best supporting actor are Heath Ledger ("The Dark Knight"), Josh Brolin ("Milk"), Michael Shannon ("Revolutionary Road"), Robert Downey Jr. ("Tropic Thunder") and Philip Seymour Hoffman ("Doubt").

LOL didn't see that one coming. If I have to I would've picked Tom Cruise myself.

I hope Wall-E wins the animated(can't imagine it won't), but I hope In Bruges wins the screenplay award. I taped it off a free movie weekend last week and really enjoyed it.

Nice of the academy to continue to refuse to accept that anything other than a traditional drama can be good. And they continue to make themselves more and more irrelevant to the average movie goer.

How? But not giving a mediocre movie you thought "roxord" a nomination for best picture? There's no way a movie like the Dark Knight would or should ever be nominated for best picture.

If anything, this year's picks are pretty darn sensible.

gay person in a gay movie = automatic nomination

that's the way it works in hollywood. they're still upset over prop8.

I've heard nothing but good reviews about Milk and Penn's acting in it.

And Slumdog Millionaire... heh... well they always have to throw a crappy, obscure Juno-type movie in there, don't they?

Just because you haven't seen it doesn't mean it's crappy. It did well at the Golden Globes and there's an entire thread about it here on ATOT.

I am surprised that Gran Torino is nowhere to be found. Maybe it was released too late to be considered. Unfortunately, it'll probably be forgotten by next year's Oscars.

Wall-E for best original screenplay? Pretty cool for a pic that's without words for the entire (and brilliant) first half.

I loved the Dark Knight .. but I don't really think of it as an academy award winning movie except for perhaps best supporting in Ledger, and special effects.

It's not about hating the film, it's just being realistic. Action flicks don't have the same impact on Oscar-types as dramas/etc.

My Picks:

best picture are "Slumdog Millionaire" or "The Reader."

best actor Mickey Rourke ("The Wrestler") But they may snub him...

best actress are Kate Winslet ("The Reader") ,Meryl Streep ("Doubt"), or Angelina Jolie ("Changeling")

best supporting actor are Heath Ledger ("The Dark Knight") or Philip Seymour Hoffman ("Doubt")

best supporting actress Amy Adams ("Doubt") or Viola Davis ("Doubt"), whichever one played the school teacher.

best director Danny Boyle ("Slumdog Millionaire") or Stephen Daldry ("The Reader").

best animated feature are "WALL-E"

best original screenplay are "In Bruges"

best adapted screenplay "Slumdog Millionaire," "The Reader" or "Doubt."

No way they snub him, Hollywood loves a good comeback story. Along with Ledger, this is the closest thing to a slam dunk on the list in my opinion.

I find it completely amazing that the piece of crap that was Revolutionary Road got anyone nominated for anything.

Supporting actor? The film is all DiCaprio and/or Winslet in every scene - a supporting actor nominee from that film? Ridiculous, they didn't stand out in any way, shape, or form.

For those of you hating on The Dark Knight, I'd argue it was at least as good as Gladiator, but with a make-believe modern setting instead of ancient Rome.

What are the nominees for soundtrack/score?

Um, were you asleep during Michael Shannon's scenes? He was incredible.

Not even close. There was real acting in Gladiator.

How was Dark Knight shafted? Ledger got his nomination. Anything beyond that would have been absurd...

Milk was one of the best reviewed films of the year. No surprise it's there. Benjamin Button and The Reader are more surprising. Well, maybe not the Reader.

NeoV, as good as Gladiator, sure. Better. Much better, IMO. Gladiator was one of the worst movies to ever win best picture.

I'd like to think Slumdog Millionaire is the front-runner but I'm probably wrong.

Downy was much better in tropic thunder than Cruise. Downy is just a better actor than Cruise.

Glad to see The Visitor in there, although I think the good acting there came mostly from the character development written in by the screenwriter(s) rather than the performance itself.

I'm not sure if it's Ledger's performance or the character he was acting that I didn't like. Was the Joker supposed to have tourette's, or was that Ledger?

I definitely enjoyed the film, but whether it was oscar worthy is a different question. This isn't to say that I think the other films nominated are worthy of oscars - I haven't seen some of them.
