The nominees for best supporting actor are Heath Ledger ("The Dark Knight"), Josh Brolin ("Milk"), Michael Shannon ("Revolutionary Road"), Robert Downey Jr. ("Tropic Thunder") and Philip Seymour Hoffman ("Doubt").

LOL didn't see that one coming. If I have to I would've picked Tom Cruise myself.

Downy was much better in tropic thunder than Cruise. Downy is just a better actor than Cruise.

While Tom Cruise's appearance in Tropic Thunder was a surprise, and he did a good job, it wasn't anywhere near as brilliant as RDJ's part. Ultimately, it was Tom being Tom (watch any of his parts where he tries to act tough, yell or scream...they're all the same). Funny, and I really enjoyed it, but it was just Tom.

RDJ's Oscar nod is well deserved. He was fantastic in Tropic Thunder. And yes, RDJ is 10000x the actor Tom Cruise is.

How the f*** did Nixon get best picture??? Ugh...so dry. Buttons was a good movie, but WAY too long, so it was far from perfect. Also shouldn't be in there. Just because Brad Pitt stars in something doesn't automatically mean it makes the list.

yeah, it hit the point where too many people liked it, so ATOT has to start hating it to reverse the stream.

My nominations for Best Picture are Iron Man and The Dark Knight. Why? Because they were the most entertaining movies released this year, that's why. And that's what movies are supposed to do ... entertain.

That's how dad did it. That's how America does it. And it's worked out pretty well so far.

Yeah, I saw it and it was a good movie. Hard to believe it was the same actor from Pope of Greenwhich Village... but in my mind it should be a battle between Sean Penn and Frank Langella.

By the way, does anyone find it awesome that Frank Langella went from playing Skeletor and Dracula to Nixon? That is awesome.

It's the Law of ATOT that when anything reaches a certain threshold of popularity people on here start saying they don't like it. There must be a lot of latent hipsters on here or something.

There were so many posts about how "OMG AWESOME" it was at first and now 95% say it was average or sucked.

You got the wrong award...yes, the Oscars have slipped, but not to that level. Go to MTV or people's choice for that kind of award.

No offense, but the Dark Night was over hyped. It was good, and that dead guy did an awesome job, but the movie itself wasn't that great.

Don't worry though, one day you will get older and realize that the movies you love so much today aren't that good. You will one day appreciate movies that don't fall out of the cookie cutters mold. Yayyy, another movie based on a comic book.

Also, you will also come to realize that these award shows are pointless. Whenever someone is a candidate or the winner, think about how much additional money will be made on DVD sales relative to other titles like the Dark Night. Seriously, how much more money will Dark Night produce if it won 7 awards? Now ask the same thing about Benjamin Button ... and be honest.

You think these shows are anything more than advertisements?

While I agree with you in that Rourke is pick for Best Actor, will you stop repeating yourself in this thread?

I believe I counted you posting four times that Rourke should win. We get it. Stop.

gay person in a gay movie = automatic nomination

that's the way it works in hollywood. they're still upset over prop8.

I've heard nothing but good reviews about Milk and Penn's acting in it.

From who? The 4 people that saw it?

I actually saw it, and it was an OK movie - I would certainly not rate it Oscar material, but I'm not part of the Hollywood demographic. And Penn makes plays a fine gay man.

Meet The Spartans will give it a run for its money.

EDIT: Nevermind, everything Meet the Spartans was nominated for was actually a joint nomination with Disaster Movie.

So to correct my post, I think the only movie that will give it serious competition is The Love Guru.

Exactly!!! Ive seen all the movies on the best picture nom list except for the reader and am very surprised at them. TDK was entertaining and at the end i felt like i got my moneys worth. Stuff like frost/nixon is a joke tbh. Its a good movie but not anywhere near best pic of the year. TDK did very well well at the box office. Everyone that i know that went to see it. Saw it because "they heard it was a good movie" and also said they heard ledgers performance was good. Oh well its typical oscar stuff. If its a romance/drama it automatically gets +10 points in the academies eyes.

I still think Dark Knight was awesome. I also think Heath Ledger "stole the show" or that the show was sculpted for his stealing. However the movie without him is not bad and I think that is where people have lost sight. I haven't seen a lot of the other movies in that list though so it's hard to say something isn't deserving of it's place.

Had surpressed the memory of Meet the Spartans already, and luckily did not see The Love Guru

Meh, the Dark Knight was pretty damn good. Everyone I know came out of it astonished at how good it was. At least they got Heath Ledger nominated for best supporting actor. He deserves it.

Also, it is interesting to note that there are more straight out haters than fanboys. Interestingly enough, most of these people appear to have missed a scene or two, or misinterpreted something. I had to watch TDK 3 times to really catch everything to the point of comprehension. Kinda like The Prestige.

Oh, because you're so much more mature than the rest of us right? Get your head out of your ass. Sure, it's based on a comic book. Comic books (aka Graphic Novels) can be pretty damn complex in some cases. The "kid's book" thing is a stereotype. It's as valid as any other form of literature. Lots of relative crap with a few awesome bits.

Oh, and I do appreciate movies that don't fall out of cookie cutter molds. I also thoroughly enjoyed TDK, Iron Man, Transformers, and others. The two aren't mutually exclusive. That, and TDK was hardly cookie cutter Batman. It just happened to be based on a world that was already created by DC decades ago. If they threw that away, it wouldn't be Batman.
