I'm surprised Madagascar 2 didn't get a nomination for best animated feature. I think that got the shaft more than TDK.

Dark knight was not that good. Yea if you are a M.Bay type fan then you might think it was great. But in terms of a movie lasting, it will not hold.
Uhh.. I HATE Michael Bay movies (I really wanted to walk out of Transformers I got so annoyed with it), and though Dark Knight was amazing. I really can't see how you can even compare the two.

My nominations for Best Picture are Iron Man and The Dark Knight. Why? Because they were the most entertaining movies released this year, that's why. And that's what movies are supposed to do ... entertain.
That's how dad did it. That's how America does it. And it's worked out pretty well so far.
Start your own movie award ceremony then.
I have. It's called the wallet award. Good movies = purchase.

he's not comparing. He's just saying that the type of person that thinks The Dark Knight is brilliant or original is likely the type of person that also likes Michael Bay films.
meaning, in comparison to the ave action flick, TDK is really good. If that's your bar, then you'd be expected to imagine it actually being brilliant.
In comparison to Academy level movies, it's not. It remains a good action flick.
So no, it did not get shafted. It was not in contention.

WTF, they chose a lot of craptastic movies/actors in my opinion.....and ledger got the only nomination, because he died while making the flick.

Nice of the academy to continue to refuse to accept that anything other than a traditional drama can be good. And they continue to make themselves more and more irrelevant to the average movie goer.

I agree, the movie has little depth to it, its just a fun action movie that you watch and have a great time, but it doesn't stick with you. The only philosophical point I got out of it was that George Bush really is a good guy and the movie is a metaphor for the war in Iraq, and I don't even think that's what the director intended.
As for "internet yuppie" crap, I can assure you I am not swayed by the idiocies f most movie lovers sites, I though the same thing after watching the movie as I do now. Its a great movie, but its not a DEEP movie. Think of like Predator, the ultimate manly movie, with all that muscle and sweat and adrenaline it just kicks ass and takes name, but it doesn't deserve an OSCAR...

I'm pretty skeptical that The Reader and Benjamin Button were better than The Dark Knight. I suppose I will have to see them to say for sure, but all indications are that they are not great movies. There are movies that may be even more deserving than The Dark Knight, but compared to those two I find it likely that The Dark Knight was better. I would like to see either the Dark Knight or Wall-E in one spot and The Wrestler in the other occupied by those two movies.
Some quick research indicates the following interesting findings:
The Reader
Rotten Tomatoes: 60%
MetaCritic: 58
On only 4 of metacritic's "critic's top ten lists" of 2008 (zero in the top 3)
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Rotten Tomatoes: 72%
Metacritic: 69
On only 11 of metacritic's top 10 lists (4 in the top 3)
Milk
RT: 92%
Meta: 84
On 32 of metacritic's top 10 (11 top 3)
Slumdog Millionaire
RT: 95%
Meta: 86
On 29 of meta's top 10s (17 top 3)
Frost/Nixon
RT: 91%
Meta: 80
On 13 of meta's top 10s (2 top 3)
The Wrestler
RT: 98%
Meta: 81
On 19 of meta's top 10s (6 top 3)
Wall-E
RT: 96%
Meta: 93
On 45 top 10s (25 top 3)
The Dark Knight
RT: 94%
Meta: 82
On 33 top 10s (17 top 3)
The reader is over 30% lower rated on rotten tomatoes and 20 lower on metacritic than the last 6 above. It is 34% lower than The Dark Knight and appears on 17 fewer top 10 lists).
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is 20% lower rated than the last 6 on rotten tomatoes and 10-15 points on metacritic.
I'd say film critics on the whole, people paid to watch movies who overall tend to have more refined taste than your typical Michael Bay fans, tend to agree with the notion that The Dark Knight was a very good movie, and that other movies may be more appropriate films to list as "Best Picture."
Unfortunately it's not up to them. It's up to people in the academy, who tend to fall head over heels for Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet, Ron Howard, and Cate Blanchett.

Now the burning question, will Ledger actually win? I havent seen enough of the movies to judge, he was amazing in TDK but that was all, I agree the film is not all that and actually liked Batman Begins much more.

The Wrestler - expected to see this on the Best Picture, Director or Screenplay one as well.
If you have not seen it, its a great movie.
