ok, so ive seen a few movies this year but for the life of me i can not think of a single one that is "motion picture of the year" winner.

if i had a vote it would be Zombieland.

but of course the Academy will come up with some film that only 2% of the population have heard of.

The reason for this is simple statistics. Dozens of movies are released every year, and only a few get mainstream exposure. The Academy evaluates every single movie released, regardless of whether it was popular or not.

I think we know who's probably going to get best cinema effects and best art direction.

Yeah but it's always on some boring subject matter like some retarded indian kid winning it big on some game show. Why can't they find any screen writers and directors worth a damn to produce Doom?

The Hurt Locker is winning a lot of awards, certainly going to get a nomination for Best Picture, not sure if it wins though.

It would be nice to see Up! win.

I enjoyed Hurt Locker but a lot of it was very unrealistic and just plain didn't make sense to the point of distraction... at least for me. Was watching with an exclamation mark over my head the whole time. I wouldn't count on it winning, I don't think I'd even nominate it.

In case you're wondering what I'm talking about:

I'm talking about an independent bomb squad/assault/sniper team that travels alone without escorts or backup.

And supposedly there are going to be 10 nominees in each category this year instead of 5.

This may actually get more viewers if their favorite movies are nominated at least. Seeing some of the pathetic nominations year in and year out for movie of the year or the movie that people saw and just said it was ok but still wins has basically tuned me away from the awards.

What? That movie was awesome. Did you even bother watching it? And I'm not referring to Doom.

It can't be James Cameron because that would require a brand new thread.

God. AVATAR wasn't all that impressive.
It was Star Wars on crack using CGI when it wasn't need just to use it.
If you see it in "2D" it is no big deal.
Granting the movie an award based on its "3D" version is a joke as that is a technology that is not unique to the movie.

Did you even watch the movie in 3D? I would love to know what other movie used this technology as well as Cameron because quite frankly I would love to see that movie.

As far as North American films go: Up in the Air, The Hurt Locker, Inglourious Basterds, Precious, probably some others I am forgetting.

Lots of other good films this year: An Education, In The Loop, A Prophet, Mother, I could go on for a while...

From the responses I've heard from people who've seen it, I'm thinking The Blind Side will be a front runner for Best Picture.

Avatar will be the front runner for visual effects.

The Princess & the Frog will likely win best original song since it's Disney and they tend to have a lock on that category.

Either Up or Princess & the Frog will get best animated feature.

I'm thinking Quentin Tarantino might finally get his Best Director Oscar for Inglorious Basterds

So you are saying that a 3rd party technology that IS NOT part of the movie should be considered?

Hell, get high and see most movies. They are probably all really good.
Should someone in the academy vote for a movie based on how good it is when they are high?

I though Sherlock Holmes was good but so late in the year may not get much bid, plus with Avatar over shadowing it.

Oh I thought you were gonna mention another scene, i.e. when they bump into the Brits?

You do realize that the camera technology that was used to film Avatar in 3D was in fact developed by the director, right? It's not really 3rd party in that case.

Cameron and Sony worked together to design new 3D cameras. so yes, it is certainly new from a technical standpoint. The visuals in Avatar are the result of a completely redesigned effects technique, as well as production scheme.

Special effects have been around for many, many decades. Meliese was doing ground-breaking work back in the 20s, and many of the techniques that he pioneered are still used. Using your argument, any film effects used after Meliese are "not unique to the movie."

im thinking either him or kathryn bigelow wins it. eastwood and reitman's name will probably get thrown into the mix, but i think it's pretty much going to be a two-horse race. but i would love to see tarantino take it.
i mean it his "masterpiece".
