I opened new accounts with four online vendors in the past month. This morning I got home from work and had a message from Western Union on my answering machine. I called them, only to find out that...
Someone was using my NAME, ADDRESS and CREDIT CARD number to try and send $493 to a Bulgarian address.
WU cancelled the transfer.

Please remember to check your CC accounts periodically.

that is really interesting because WU usually only accepts cash...good luck if this turns bad on you

I contacted my CC company and found out that there was another $30 charge, from a software vendor, that I didn't make. They (First USA CC), are very good about this kind of stuff. They have cancelled my CC and will issue me a new one.

FYI, I switched to Amex Blue last year mainly to be able to access my account online. Their website isn't the most efficient, but I can keep track of my charges daily. It's very nice to be able to quickly see when my card gets charged for the things I order online. If your credit card company doesn't allow online access, I suggest looking around for one that does.

I had a cap1 card stolen online. prolly egghead or paypal, since thats all i used it with.

anyways, they cancelled my card, and sent a new one out the next week. The fraud guys also called me up and discussed the situation. I had to fill out an affidavit saying the charge was not mine..

Was simple,

I contacted all four of the vendors, and asked them to purge their systems of my personal information.
As much online buying as some people do...
How in the world would you ever know where your CC information was stolen from?

Well what if your 'credit card' is actually a debit card on your checkign account. I've heard conflicting reports;

1) Debit cards don't have the same fraud protection as credit cards (IE: you are responsible only for the first $50.00 of a credit card theft, but you are responsible for ALL of the theft on a debit card).

2) If it's a VISA debit card, your bank must adhere to VISA rules so you have the same protections, but you might only have 24 hours from the point of fraud to report the fraud.

Does anyone have any experience with this?

I'm very close to opening a seperate checking account and getting a debit VISA just for Internet purchases.

I haven't been screwed...yet.

My close associate had his identity stolen (SSN and all) and the crooks went crazy with it. Got all sorts of credit cards, etc. It took him over 3 years to get it straightened out.

To all those who ordered the Iomgea 12x10x32x from compusa last month, check your credit card statement!!!
I checked my credit card statement online and they charged me full price 279.99 + tax + shipping = 302.99
They should of charged me 129 + tax + shipping = 143.09
My receipt even shows 143.09. I called to correct this and they said they would call me back. argh

sorry not a hot deal but I'm sure there are many other people with the same problem

It must be Richter stealing the cards. I am not sure if he's from Bulgaria, but English is certainly not his forte.

I would NOT recommend using a debit card to buy anything online. My bank called me a few weeks ago and told me that my credit card number may have been stolen (most likely egghead), and they told me that my VISA check card does not offer any benefits that a regular VISA card has and that I should always use a credit card vs. a check card when ordering online.

I also had someone use my credit card to order adult internet sites, and I had to go through the website to get my money back, because the bank did not want to get involved.

Just a little warning.

sygyzy: you apparently are either not an avid gamer or not old enough to have the experience but that Richter's quote is from an old game and if you click on his link it will show you what he is talking about

Richter--That is way funny.

I had the same thing happen. WU/cc/Bulgaria. WU was very proactive about it. They called me, and had already stopped the charge before I could call them back. They said it most likely was from the egghead deal. My cc wasn't worried, surprisingly. They just put a note on my account. Said it was no biggie.

CharlesWaters--I believe #1 is correct. You might want to check the credit card board on www.motleyfool.com, or www.clarkhoward.com. I believe Clark Howard feels check cards are a definite no.

Debit cards vs. Credit cards

I have one of each from my credit union (both have VISA logos). I believe I got a new policies & procedures-like statement within the past year indicating that online purchases with my debit card would be protected to the same level as everything else. So, your mileage may vary.

Unfortunately, I cannot currently track my credit card online, so I typically reserve its use for large B&M purchases and auto repair.

Checked my CC account (now it's habit after egghead hacker crap) and found a $29.95 charge that wasn't mine. Called CC company, they said they had seen it before. I was instructed to destroy the card immediately and wait 5-7 days for a new card and affadavid. At least I won't be spending money on hot deals while I wait.

FYI, please remember to use different passwords for your online financial accounts. There have been reports of hackers breaking into hotmail.com and trying the same passwords on Paypal accounts. This is especially true with hackers that see hotmail.com accounts on the major auction sites.

I know of at least one person that had over $500 pilfered from their Paypal account.

Out of three credit cards I use, I have to question about two charges a month. Sometimes from web companies, or promotions that just keep charging. Or weird travel packages, etc.

It's now part of my routine to investigate strange charges.
