Ok, Wolfie, I stumped...I am a little slow on the uptake (I am a turtle!) but who, or what, is a "Frys" ?

Thanks, mrwizer, for the link...haven't come across this board's mfg before...I usually buy Asus, Intel and Gigabyte mobo's. I do have 2 cards with "Zero" balances but if My significant other (otherwise known as "THE WIFE") catches me using these cards instead of doing a Dave Ramsey on them (a schredoctomy) - there will be a new statue erected where I live - My ASS nailed to a cross!

It's certainly not a bad deal, but if I might make a suggestion for anyone considering this, I would strongly suggest looking at a 3800+ and even a mediocre board. You'll get more bang for your buck, and definitely more crunching power (I'm now touting a 4800+, 4600+, and 4400+, in addition to a pair pf P4D 830's, and I've done the comparisons).

Don't crucify yourself. I know you Borgs are under a lot of strain lately, trying to catch up to us in the turkey race. In fact, I am offering a :gift: FULL PARDON to Wolfsraider :gift: (hey, if the great stainmaker, Bill Clinton, can throw pardons left and right, why can't I?).
Just get that Quantum Singularity Drive back online and make this a horserace!

Thanks for the processor info, Ronin. You and Anandtech have the same ideals about a sweet spot for current crop of processors. It's a shame that my piggy bank keeps spitting out dustbunnies to make another box!

I've been thinking about the X2 3800+ to replace my A64 3200+ winnie, but recently saw a deal on an Dual core Opteron. I know the opteron runs a little slower, but it has more cache and can supposibly be overclocked well. What is the real difference between the opterons and X2s?

Oh and a  for looking out for the TeAm!

I believe the way it works, in laymans terms, is -

AMD etches a wafer with eh, 100 or so Toledo cores on it at their fab in Dresden. They cut the wafer up and test each individual die in a process which is called "binning"...

The "cream of the crop" performers get soldered into dual-core Opteron or X2 4800+ packages. The "average" performers get soldered into X2 4400+ packages. The "below average" performers get soldered into X2 3800+ packages which disable half of the cache on each core, this even includes some chips with actual physical defects in the cache. Any remaining dies after this are scrap.

The reason the Opterons are clocked lower despite being "cream of the crop" in terms of die quality, is that these are meant for server use where uptime, reliability, etc. are of the utmost concern, as opposed to pure screaming performance which is more of an "enthusiast" consideration. It's why we're here, after all!

That makes sense, those shifty little.....well thanks for the clarification. I don't think my current board will support one, but it will support an X2.
