Well when I had it car is was pretty cheap. Under 1.60 for sure. But since some idiot ran into my car and then drove off I have not had to buy any gas. I get to ride a bike now! Only 2 miles to work...

I don't think I really work for this thread, it's 1.73 in Sherman, but I travel a lot, accross north texas and southern Oklahoma, it varies anywhere between 1.66 and 1.95 for the 87 Oct.

Cool but don't mention that in P&N. They insist Gas has to hit $6 a gallon before anyone would switch to hybrids.

Wow, you actually venture in there? The only times I've been there were on accident trying to get to OT (another land of flamefests) or the SFF\Notebooks forum. I wouldn't post in P&N if you paid me, plus P&N just sounds dirty to me .

I pay 0.80? per litre here in Greece, but it is Unleaded, 95-Octane. I think that there is no 87 Octane here in Greece, only from 95 upto 100-Octane

Let me know how it drives.

I was behind a Prius the other day on the Interstate and it looked like the driver was having trouble keeping it in lane, it looked unsteady at high speed (this was at 70 mph).

don't forget, most europe folks pay through the nose for
a. much higher octane, they use 95 and up oct. like we use 87 oct. (we can only get over 93 octane if we go to an airport and pay huge amounts (last time I checked about 4 years ago) 100 oct. was $11.50 a gallon) and it costs a lot more to produce the cleaner burning fuel, and
b. they have higher taxes on thier fuel because per capita they don't have as many vehicles. (which also raises the fuel costs)

I average with me and my wife (at current prices of 1.60-1.75) about $130-150 a week on fuel, at englands, ~ $5 a gallon I'd end up spending somewhere between 19266 - 14508 more a year on fuel that what I spend now at those prices.

130 a week * 52 weeks *(5/1.6)difference in price per gallon = 26026 - (130 *52)= 19266 difference
150 a week * 52 weeks *(5/1.75)difference in "" "" "" = 22308 - (150 * 52) = 14508 difference

and I make less than 30k a year, and only get .22 per mile for my travel expenses from work.

between my wife and I we average about 1400 -1800 miles a week (my truck gets about 18 mpg and her jeep gets about 22 mpg and I usually avererage on my truck between 1200 - 1600 a week myself)

Ethanol? Cool; I didn't know that was actually used anywhere. I thought it was just one of those "possible" fossil fuel alternatives, like hydrogen. It's good that they're actually using it, even if only as an additive (dilutitive?).

They use Ethanol here in the Minneapolis/St.Paul area too. All gas stations here in the metro have to have 10% added to the fuel. All octane blends. There is a few stations tho that have a seperate pump just for "off road" engines like boats and snowmobiles. They won't even authorize the pump if you try filling your car with the stuff. I think it's been about 10 years now that they started adding the Ethanol to the fuels here.

Totally agree. We went through this when we were paying around $1.25/gallon then it climbed into the $1.60+ per gallon range then dropped down around $1.50/gallon so it would appear 1.50 isn't that bad. :disgust: :|

$1.539 Can you say Diesel

Diesel is cheaper than reg.unleaded in the spring/summer.
And more in the fall/winter.

95 octane unleaded is 1,21 ?/liter with local variations...
Diesel is 1,06 ?/l while 98 lead is 1,28 ?/l.

gallon.... Oh, 1 gallon = 4 quarts; 1 quart = 2 pints; 1 pint = 0,568 l... hang on, US-pint is smaller.... 1 US-pint = 0,473 l giving 1 US-gallon = 3,785 l

So 95 octane should be 5,44 $/gallon... :Q

I have not got to drive it yet, but from what he says it drives just like the other Civics. (He owned one before, and test drove normal ones.) He said one thing you have to get used to is the engine shutting off when you are stopped for a good period of time.

I personally don't like the Prius simple because of how it looks.

They have been around for some time actually. It's just that most Americans don't like hybrids for unknown reasons. :S

There will be a 300hp Hybrid Lexus 330 coming soon too.

I'm paying 0.88 Euro for 1 liter diesel. I'm driving around 5 km to uni one way, and I'm quite close to it. Then you must consider that at 150 to 200 (depending on car and situation even more) cars take a few liters more. There is a lot of stop and go in the cities, so you accelerate, brake, etc. Costs a lot of fuel too. In USA I presume you can simply put on the cruise control and just have a rest... the roads may be very long, but since you don't accelerate and brake a lot its pretty economical.
I drove a full loaded Citroen Xsara at 150 to 170 km/h, consumption was like 5 or 6 liters super per 100 km. My diesel takes 10-12 liter as I only drive in the city (and am accelerating quite hard). When I used to drive it on the highway it took like 6 liter with a HUGE trailer (around the size of a minivan maybe... maybe a bit smaller), driving at around 100-130 km/h. Usually it should take around 4 to 5 liter when driving mostly on the highway.

The bus and train system isn't very good, so its still best to own a car. And drive with a bike during winter time... good luck. I usually never take the bus or walk, and I'm living in a rather big city. On the countryside you're kinda lost without a car... probably not as bad as USA, but still.

the main reason being until the new ford escape hybred comes out in July, there aren't any hybreds with enough room for the stuff we carry around (kids, groceries, camping gear, etc.) In Texas we typically carry around a lot of stuff, and travel for long periods of time (just to visit my folks is like driving accross the entire state of pensylvania E to W, and that's without even crossing 1/2 of TX) kids don't do well cooped up in cramped vehicles for that long. I personally can't wait to see full specs of the Hybred Escape, Ford claims they get better than 40mpg in town, but hint that hi-way driving will not have as good of economy, if it's anywhere near 40mpg, I may just trade my dakota in on one. (and my cherokee too)

hmm, if you're caring that much about economy, why these huge jeeps, trucks etc.? Are they really so neccessary? What about station wagons? And are these huge engines neccessary? I mean you are having pretty low speed limits, oposed to some german highways, and as far as I heard you don't break them anyway. Here its quite normal to go 60 to 70 when 50 is allowed. So, what for fast cars?

But the low octane may be a point. Here it goes up to 100 afaik, how come in the US 87 is ok?
And taxes on fuel is pretty high, I recall something like 80% in Germany.
