.....for the weekend to go deer hunting

So I imagine i'll have a pretty nice dump on sunday evening I'll be heading up there Friday when I get out of class. Just thought I would give you all a heads up so there weren't any suspicions or anything like that.

There will still be some work units being submitted from my assimilated computers, but not from my home fleet.

Wish me luck

Edit: Didn't get one first season so i'm off to the timber again this weekend. Unless I come home to transmit, i'll probly be dumping on Sunday. Just lettin ya'll know

Now are you going cheep dear hunting or real deer hunting?

For thoughs that don't know cheep deer hunting is using a gun or some other type of advanced weapon.

Real deer hunting is going into the forest with nothing but some water and food. Then you must use the land to kind weapons and such to kill the deer.

Now here is my reasoning if you would like to call it that.

If you are going to be hunting then it should be a battle between the two animals you and the deer. Who ever is the better animal will win. Now you might say well we are smarter and invented guns so we can use them. Sure if you invented the gun! But if you didn't you can't use it.

Anyways good luck.

Here! Here! for bow hunting!!! That is my weapon of choice for most of deer season. General rifle for deer just opened this past Monday here in Virginia, so Saturday I'm going hunting with my gun. I'm not going to use my typical rifle though. I bought a rifled barrel for my shotgun, so I'm going to try that. I've never hunted deer with a shotgun before, so it should be fun since you have to get a lot closer with a shotgun than you do with a rifle.

For those none hunters, or none gun owners:
A shotgun shooting a slug through a rifled barrel has a range of about 2200 - 2500 feet.
A 30-.06 rifle (the most popular) has a range of about 17000 feet

A shotguns accuracy drops off significantly after about 100 yards (shoots 4" to 5" groups at 100yrds)
I can shoot 1.5" to 1.75" groups at 250yrds with a 30-.06

Which is preferable if you're attacked by a bear, the shotgun firing a slug or the .30-06? My dad has a .30-06 and when we went hiking in Alaska when I was young, he would bring it along in case of bear attack.

I would love to have the time to try this.

Bow hunting really is the way to go for the best experiences.

lynx,
What state are you in?

I'm hoping to finally get out Thanksgiving weekend.

Illinois, and i'm hunting shotgun season. Next year I hope to get out and try bow hunting. I didn't have time this summer to get a bow and do some practicing so hopefully I will next year

RemyCanad, please don't crap in my thread. If you think i'm not a "real deer hunter", i'm very sorry you feel that way. You better start walking to work because you didn't invent the car

Info on deer slug accuracy and range.

for those who have never hunted aroud here if you get within 250 yards take the shot it is about as close as you are going to get thats why I use a 30-06

mechBgon, if I were to choose between a shotgun with a slug, or a 30-.06, while hunting for, or protection from, a bear, I would go for the slug. I'd want to have as much lead, and as much kinetic energy, as I could possible have. A slug has 3 times the mass of a 30-.06 bullet.

Gulp!
The mad bear got you.

The velocity and energy from a 30-06 is much more than a shot gun. Close range might be alright though, but I wouldn't want him that close.

Your right, it would depend on the distance to the bear. I should have clarified. At 50 yards or less, I would take the slug. Anything beyond 50 yards, I would take the 30-.06, or my favorite, a 7mm magnum. If you want some real stopping power, go with a .300 Remington Ultra Mag.

If you shot a bear in the heart it would take the bear 2 minutes to die.
You had better shoot a bear in the brain/head.
If you like these one guys in Alaska had a 'rogue' bear they 'had' to hunt down found each other in the brush the bear won the fight against 4 or 5 guys.

As for cheap hunting or real hunting.
Leave the bullets at the store and buy all the bear you can.
OR
Take the Camping Trailers and Play cards and cook steaks.

Why would I want to buy the bear instead of hunt the bear, the hunt is the best part. Either way the bear ends up in my belly.

Actually, you could. A civilian AK47 is considered a standard rifle since it's semi-automatic like many hunting rifles. Now if it were full auto capable, which would be a military version and therefore illegal , you couldn't use it. Could you image the "OH Sh^t" expression on the deers face if a hunter came after him with full auto. Then again, seeing a deer with any kind of expression on it's face would be quite impressive in it's own right.

I just slip out in the backyard in the morning and BOOM a deer in the freezer.

Well, since bear attacks happen at point blank range (Obviously ) I prefer having a short-barreled 12-Gauge loaded with Rottweil brand slugs.

My understanding was that if you have to stop a charging bear, and had any time to chose the target, you'd aim for the shoulders in hopes of breaking its shoulder, to slow it down enough to get away and reload for a kill shot.

Maybe I'm alone on this, but why kill a bear / deer period? I don't see the reasoning for senselessly murdering an animal unless it's absolutely neccesary for survival, and since we all have grocery stores near us, I don't think it's justified.
