Long story short, my motherboard is dead.

So I now have a system running an Athlon XP 2000+ with out a motherboard.

I also have a Dragon II V 1.0 P4 board sitting on the shelf.

My options are to buy another board for my Athlon or buy a processor for the P4 board.

What do you guys suggest? As for dist. computing use it will be used on TAS so the project will vary. (I have not been helping them recently because of stability issues with my computer that is now obviously caused by the motherboard)

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

I should also mention I have no problem overclocking as long as it's stable. This is my main coding rig so I can't have it crashing all the time.

Well the obvios question is what is your budget?

If its 100.00 or more then the p4 is a good bet

If its 50.00 or so, a cheaper mobo may be the way to go.

I think unless you go amd 64 or better, the p4 would be better but only if it has ht.

Its probably a toss up if the p4 doesn't have ht.

100 would be in the budget. I would say 150 would top it out. If I am spending more than that I will just buy a whole new system.

If I get a P4 I would think it would have to be HT. Is there any recommendations on what version/clock speed I should get? I have been soo out of the x86 hardware loop I am not sure what is recommened anymore.

Also, if I go with the P4 I figure I can make a DC member a sweet deal on this 2000+. I am sure someone has an old socket A that could handle it.

I would get a 2.8c or better or a 2.8e or better if it was me. 800 fsb is best stay away from the 533 fsb imho.
the "c" ( northwood )version runs cooler than the "e" ( prescott) version, o/c's better. But I still prefer the "e" prescott)( version

I'd be intrested in that lil ole 2000+ as well lol
got a few spare socket a mobo's laying around

Did some pricing and am coming up with something strange. The 2.8 is more than the 3.0. :S Any thoughts on this. Also they are around 180.... (Just looked at newegg and zipzoomfly.)

Hey Remy,

Just go to the FS/FT forum and pick up a 2.8/3.0C.

Every 2.8C I have ever personally built a system with or heard about hits 3.2 almost by default.

A used one should run you around 100/120.

On a lighter note ... perhaps if you crunched FaD ... there might be a less costly alternative ... he he he

Hey... I'll send you a mobo for that 2000 for a very nominal fee if you will use it... that will mean you running 2 systems! LMK!

That is very tempting. Let me look around and make sure I have some RAM for it. I am assuming DDR 333-400.. It would be nice to a fully dedicated cruncher up and running.
