Personally, my method is basically:
1; Copy from stats-site and paste into Excel.
2; Copy from Excel, and back to Excel, choosing "Paste Special" / "Values". -- Doing it this way the data in the various columns and so on is correct, but all "garbage" is filtered-out. Note, if this works or not depends on stats-web-site, it example doesn't work with BoincStats, that still leaves-behind a lot of garbage.
3; Sort descending by total credit, afterwards move team-names up (that is sorted to bottom in own column), and fix SETI@Taiwain that has some unsupported characters in their name.
4; Copy-in yesterdays stats, and check if any teams has moved. (if "new team-name" = "yesterdays team-name";0;9999) makes it very easy to spot any differences.
5; Move "RAC" and "Total" to new locations, and delete all unneeded columns.
6; Copy-in the formula from yesterdays stats that does all calculations and 99% of formatting.
7; Choose whole sheet, and select "numbers, thousand-seperator, no decimals".
8; Copy over to notepad, copy the 1st. "tab", and choose "replace" to remove all the tabs.

Appart for TeAm AnandTech getting bolded, and any "extreme" values, like 1M days to overtake or less than 1k in any columns, the stats is fully formatted.

So, just needed to make a forum-post, add "header", "footer" and "title", and dig-out any news/technical news.

The SETI@home-stats takes roughly 5 minutes to collect, format & post, a little longer if any news to add...

With the mediocre interest in the stats, only reason is still doing them is the short time needed to post them.

Opps I saw this a bit late

[edit] I see RDs posted his full method

I basically follow a method that RD origianlly taught me about 2yrs ago for SETI & which I now use for DPAD.The layout I use from DPAD is partly copied from amdborgs old stats threads.

Copy stats (from freeDC site after hitting 'yesterday' column to sort, DPAD only ,freeDC SETI numbers seem to whacko, lol )
Paste into excel ,copy that page
Open new page 'special paste' choose 'values'
Delete unwanted columns
Move name colums to the end (makes for better spacing of stats columns)
Copy spacing columns from previous stats I've done*
Copy headers from previous stats*
Total up 'days' points credit by hitting the sum icon twice.
Save.

Then copy into the new thread which already had the stats header I've copied from a previous days stats ,I think it takes me about 10-15mins now.

*Obviously starting from scratch involves lots of manual formatting which is a right PITA & takes ages! ,make sure you keep at least one lot of previous stats ,note some fonts translate more ditrectly onto the forums then others ,can't remember which is best ,Hellburner told me that one IIRC.

No idea how to use formulas here, I've never been trained/taught to use excel.

Gleem
Using notepad is a good idea ,if I ever have to start from scratch again I'll do that.
Though you might want to use my idea of copying spacing columns from previous stats

Bok
Good to see you're sorting out SETI stats

OD
Forgotten stats master?? ,no way dude you are legendary & we loved your commentary

Nearly, I see I forgot one point:

5a; Give 3 cells "special" names, so comparison with Anandtech and so on is right, regardless of how many spots Anandtech drops (or rises)...

No idea how to use formulas here, I've never been trained/taught to use excel.
Never really learned anything either, so don't ask me how to write a script or anything...

As for formulas, atleast for "normal" things like +, -, *, /, just type-in in Excel the same formula as you would have written on paper, but instead of using "x" or something, use "A1" or "B1" or something...

The most "advanced" I've become is to use "if"-statements, this greatly helps with formatting.

If no one minds, I'm going to start doing practice stats in this thread. Basically the only bad thing would be this thread being bumped. The Borg suggested boincsynergy and BOINC Stats, so I'll be getting stats from these places...

Couple of things i've found out over the years:

Putting names last will will reduce the time to get the correct spacing. Most everyones numbers in a given column will be the same within a few digits, where name length can/will vary greatly.

In some cases, underscores will work better than dots to keep columns lined up neatly when going from the spreadsheet to a forum post. Even after "Previewing" your post & everything looks good you may still need to add/subtract dots in the final post. At east it was that way with the last forum version.

*ignore everything above if there's some way to automate the spacing & get it right. I do everything manually

This is the IF STATEMENT I use in MS Excel to automatically place the proper number of periods to the left of my number columns. It is not perfect but it is the closest I have found over the years. The IF STATEMENT may need to have additional IF STATEMENTS inserted into the formula if your numbers are larger than 9,999,999.

=IF(B1>999999.9,"",IF(B1>99999.9,"?",IF(B1>9999.9,"?..",IF(B1>999.9,"??.",IF(B1>99.9,"??...",IF(B1>9.9,"???..",IF(B1>0.9,".............","")))))))

When I want to use ranking columns up to three digits, I use a shortened version of the same formula:

=IF(B1>99.9,"",IF(B1>9.9,".",IF(B1>0.9,"...")))

The above formulas would need to be placed in the 1st column. If there is a subset ranking then just copy/paste the forumula into the 3rd column. The referenced cell within the forumula needs to be the cell to the immediate right.

Then you would get the following report which includes rankings.

Thanks Smoke it works!

But it might take longer to paste in the formula than what I usually do

How about spaces in names? How do you manage them?

GLeeM,

I use one worksheet (FETCH) strickly for a data import from the web. In another worksheet, I keep the actual template I use for posting.

If the webpage is consistant and doesn't change that often, I then create on the template worksheet LINKS from the appropriate columns on the DATA FETCH worksheet.

GLeeM,

I use one worksheet (which I've named DATA FETCH) strictly for a data import from the web. In another worksheet, I keep the actual template I use for posting.

If the web page is consistent and doesn't change that often, I then create on the template worksheet LINKS from the appropriate columns on the DATA FETCH worksheet.

Damn it, I wasn't finished but accidentally hit the RETURN key on my laptop as I'm posting this while watching (some what haphazardly) some TV. I continue:

So to do a new, fresh report, I open my excel workbook, click on the DATA FETCH tab and make sure the cursor is in cell A1. Then just click on the DATA FETCH button (not to be confused with the worksheet tab but the function) and wait for the magic to take place. That's it folks.

I have started this three different times. I was just called away to the media room where I had to get the DVD movie going for my wife and grandkids who are spending the night. whew

lol, now I see I double-posted.

Don't call RaySun2Be on me.

=IF(B1>999999.9,"",IF(B1>99999.9,"?",IF(B1>9999.9,"?..",IF(B1>999.9,"??.",IF(B1>99.9,"??...",IF(B1>9.9,"???..",IF(B1>0.9,".............","")))))))

When I want to use ranking columns up to three digits, I use a shortened version of the same formula:

=IF(B1>99.9,"",IF(B1>9.9,".",IF(B1>0.9,"...")))

The above formulas would need to be placed in the 1st column. If there is a subset ranking then just copy/paste the forumula into the 3rd column. The referenced cell within the forumula needs to be the cell to the immediate right.
Interesting. I'll have to see how that works in Open Office.

No technique is perfect. I ask AT HQ to enable the power to post images every chance I get and though nothing has been promised I believe it will happen pretty soon.
Just use a free pic hosting site.
http://pics.bbzzdd.com/ is easy enough to use, if needed.

I'm not talking about linked images, I'm talking about full blown images posted directly in the AT Forums. All sorts of interesting things would then be possible.

Check out this tutorial on BOINC VIEW available at one of our friendly crunching competitors.
Scroll down about 2/3 of the way to the section on UTILITY SOFTWARE / BOINC View.

Yeah, that's great. I had to refresh that page 3 times to get it to load
Not everyone had a fast internet connection.

From reading Forum Issues, i thought the admins/mods were against allowing embedded images?

I would be happy with the choice of a "non-kerned" font like Courier New.

Every character takes the same amount of space so no alignment problems.

I wonder if there is a greasemonkey script to accomplish this. I'm going to have to look into that.

What stats (columns) would ya'll say are in every project? Or which would be best for a summary?

user | RAC | credits

Per BMC: (definitely makes more sense)
user | credits | team position | change in team position

RAC is only for BOINC projects, though. And it's a fairly unimportant number in my opinion. Usually, if you do a project for a limited time, you hit the highest RAC right before you quit a project (like with TAS). And if you do a project for months, after a while your RAC will stay roughly the same. So, user, creds, team position and something like a change of position in team are the most interesting ones to me.

I just realized that searching the forums for "stats" is not the best way to find this thread.

Okay, so after fusterclucking my way through the stats for a month, I learned quite a bit (primarily don't forget where you are getting your stats from!). But I have two quick questions: 1) how often are the stats normally done? Every day or week? I was doing them every 4 or 5 days; why I have no idea. Also, is there a standard for the milestones? I was roughly using something like 1k, 5k, 10k, 25k, 50k, 75k, 100k, every 100k after.

EDIT: Weird. This ended up being an accidental one month bump.
