while stretching! Actually, I was doing some ballistic stretching. Felt something while doing split leg stretches, then moved on to a swinging leg stretch when it gave out. Hurt almost to the point of making me cry.

Dammit, today was deadlift day.

I've never pulled anything while doing dynamic stretching before. Were you warmed up before hand?

I actually did an experiment this year in regards to stretching. Previously, I always did static stretching before sports. Every single year, I pulled my hammie. This year, I did NO static stretching at all, and opted to do a brief warm up, then some dynamic stretching of my legs. Didn't pull anything at all.

No, and admittedly, I've gotten into a bad habit of not warming up. This is what happens when you take a shortcut.

Indeed.

Once you recover from this, I would advise that you skip static stretching before work outs. Do a quick warm up then do some dynamic stretching for a little bit. Save your static stretching for post work out or your off days.

That's what has been working well for me at least.

I never ever stretch cold. I have almost gone entirely away from static stretches. 8-12 minute warm up and controlled dynamic stretching.

sucks to injure yourself stretching, but lesson learned

yeah, usually I do it as outlined by Koing and you, ziggy, just didn't this morning. Old, bad habits are hard to break some time.

Ballistic stretches are not usually considered the same as dynamic stretches. Were you bouncing into your end range of motion? If so, that's one of the fastest ways to actually acquire a strain if you're not already limber. That's ballistic stretches. Dynamic warm-ups go first then skill specific movements. Afterward, complete static stretching without any sort of bounce. Don't push into pain with a stretch, push to a moderate pulling sensation.
