i recently had a system built for me and have been using it with no problem for about 2 months now.

today I installed Motherboard Monitor 5 and Via Hardware monitor to check up on my temps.

Upon opening the apps, my CPU temp was at 63. I watched as it climbed to 71 over the next few minutes. i shut down the machine and checked the BIOS PC Health status to make sure this wasn't an error. It watched that rise to 74!

I shut down my machine again (for only about 15 minutes) and came back. Opened Motherboard Monitor again and it read 64.

Is it possible that the apps are causing the heat to increase? It seems impossible to me, but I have had no noticable problems with my machine in 2 months of use despite the high tempuratures.

Looks like I'm buying a Taisol now tho!

My system:
Tbird 1Ghz 266FSB
Abit KT7A
Thermaltake Chrome ORB
No outtake case fan
HD, CD, CDRW, ZIP

My system temp is 28 and my CPU fan is running at ~5000 RPM

All the fans are running.. maybe the person who built the machine didn't install HS&F well?

Thanks

Get an exhaust fan and ditch the Orb. Chrome Orbs are pretty, and while they can cool a PIII just fine, they lack what it takes for the T'birds.

Yes. As the CPU does more things it creates more heat. You can compare it roughly to a car engine. If it is idling it produces less heat than when going at 5000RPM. The same is true for a CPU.

The chrome orb is a bad HSF in the first place, so there is one of your problems. You will want probably one fan exhusting air and maybe one fan in the front acting as an intake.

That is Way too hot. Make sure you have good contact with the CPU and heatsink. Don't use that stupid thermal pad thing. Even the cheap Heatsinking compund at Radio shack is better. Arctic Silver II droped my CPU temperature by 4C by it's self (and I had good contact before that). I can't stress it enough, Air is a VERY good Insalator, make sure there are NO gaps between your CPU and Heat sink.

Even for an orb that sounds too high. If you've got some heatsink compound, take the orb off, clean it up (get that pad all removed) and reinstall it. If still too high, go shopping. Or just buy a new HS/F and save yourself a step.

Then again if it's running fine maybe don't worry about it. I know it bugs me when mine goes up over 44, but that's because I'm easily annoyed and have put time and effort into getting my sink nice and flat and fan quiet as it'll be. If not for pure wounded pride, it could run 80 all the time and if it didn't crash, I wouldn't care.

Thats damn hot. Remove your heatsink and apply/re-apply some thermal compound on the CPU core. Maybe he did'nt do it right.

Thanks for all the replies.

Since the system has been running fine for so long and still is, I'm really just worried about my CPU's lifetime.

I'm just gonna go buy that Taisol and some Arctic Freeze II.

UPDATE!

My CPU temp has dropped back within normal bounds! how?

a few weeks ago I installed a non-official patch downloaded from viahardware.com (PCI Latency Patch). This patch was supposed to resolve issues with the KT7A mobo and SBLive!. Didn't work for me, but I left it applied. I later read many posts complaining that the patch created heat issues.

upon removal of this patch, my CPU temp has dropped to 42-43. It was a nice sight to watch it go steadily from 66 to 42!

Still using the Thermaltake ORB DUO462-2. Stickin with it until I have time for overclocking fun.
