Well, my intention was to show that using taxes as a percentage of GDP as some sort of metric for comparing countries is meaningless. You can argue that my charts are just as meaningless, but at least measuring by income is a more accurate reflection of the tax burden on the people.

If you wanted a more realistic comparison, you would have to look at services received and what each country pays for them. In that case, for the US you would have to add out-of-pocket health care costs to the total tax bill to compare them to countries where health care is government funded.

For 2011, private health care costs for the US was estimated at $2.7T. So if you add that to the tax bill, as a percentage of GDP, the US jumps from 27% to about 40%.

Another way to look at it would be that taxes & health care came up to about $6.5T, or about $20K per person in the US. That would be the number to compare with other countries.

This, so this. Most of the higher percentage GDP countries provide more government services. It's all about value per dollar taxed. I get the joy of seeing how much less I'm making in take home pay tomorrow. Should be fun!

My take home is down quite a bit for this year as well

If the idiots in DC were looking for a sure-fire way to slow down the economy, they found it, I'm going to have to cut spending (unlike our worthless government representatives, I understand that you can't just spend more than you bring in). Just about everyone else I know is doing the same (cutting their spending), that's going to hurt the economy.

yup and the hit it took on my take home. i guess you are rich so you dont give a shit so you can sit back and point and laugh ant us grunts who work for a living.

I am not rich. I do work hard and have been able to build a solid Middle Class income. Am I happy about a extra $2k coming out my paycheck this year? No. However I realized that when the SS reduction was first put through it was only temporary to stimulate the economy and I knew that it was going away at some point once the economy started to get back on it's feet. Unlike some people I realize that we got to stop expecting $1.5 in benefits while only paying a $1.

Knowing that something is going to happen doesn't make it better when it does happen. Still sucks that I have that much less take home pay. Add in the health insurance cost getting jacked up, and it's a real turd sandwich for a lot of people.

To be more accurate, we're expecting $1 in benefits while paying $1. In reality, we're paying $1.50 and getting $0.50 in benefits with the rest getting wasted or ending up in the pockets of cronies.

Ya, I just looked at mine. My SS tax is up over $100 a pay period. Such is life I guess.

What is your pay period? (2 weeks)?

If so, you max out SS in early/mid November? (based on $100 from 2% = over $5,000)

Edit: Never mind, I saw your response about maxing out earlier in this thread.

Taxes...hmpf! They want you to pay them for just living...I dont pay taxes, simply because I grow an catch my own food...which is in the sea...you know whats 70% of the whole planet? Why pay for food when you can catch an abundentcy an even turn profit from it? One tuna can sell for over 5 grand easy, some 10 grand.

An when I work, its always under the table jobs, but Ive been taxed on regular jobs just mad I never did my taxes lol

I disagree. People are expecting a $1.50 in benefits while only paying $1. The chronic deficits highlight this. Considering if we also look at the biggest items in the budget Defense, MediCare, MediCaid and SS. Three out of four of those are entitlement spending for the majority of Americans. We Americans always seem to be all for budget cuts until things start geting specific.

It's going to suck for me. Been claiming 14 exemptions (effectively no withholding) for years now. My paycheck is going to get rocked hard.

No, the chronic deficits is because a big portion of every dollar spent is either wasted or goes into the pocket of cronies / lobbyists or corps that have bought ...errr.... lobbied for laws beneficial to them.

True.

That's weird. I owed ~$3k both of the last two years and never saw anything.

http://www.irs.gov/taxtopics/tc306.html

looks to be a few additional guidelines.

Generally, most taxpayers will avoid this penalty if they owe less than $1,000 in tax after subtracting their withholdings and credits, or if they paid at least 90% of the tax for the current year, or 100% of the tax shown on the return for the prior year, whichever is smaller.

i guess as with everything, if you dont get caught you dont get caught or warned or whatever. doesnt necessarily mean you are not breaking the rule. i should be getting a refund this year, intentionally paid my property taxes in december to claim them in 2012, will take standard deduction in 2013. might have to pay something then.

Well that is a interesting viewpoint considering 40+% of the budget goes to MediCare, MediCaid and Social Security. Are you making a argument on the Revenue side or spending side? You have a point about lobbyists and favorable tax law but that is more on the revenue side not on the spending side.

What do we want?
Everything!

Who's going to pay for it?
Someone else!

Whose budgets are going to get cut?
Someone else's!

I'll chime in with this: Science, Technology, Engineering, Math. Getting people interested in them as careers is an investment. A big one. (And I'll add in manufacturing, health, and infrastructure as well, might as well go for broke. ) Put money into things that will help bring and enable future success. Invest now. Compound interest doesn't just apply to dollars, it applies to people and resources as well. We had some world wars that provided a boost to some technologies, though it came at a very high cost of human lives and suffering. We had a Moon shot that helped inspire many people to pursue technical fields. Everyone else got to enjoy the many benefits of this investment.
With those people either retiring or dying of age or illness, that ride is winding down. Much of the focus is on right now, along with trying to find some way of blaming the past for any problems. Invest now, and the present-time in the future can praise the foresight of its past, rather than curse its blindness.

haha. That reminded me of a local debate I saw when the village counsel was going to end free bus rides for seniors (along with laying off cops, not hiring firemen, freezing wages and ordering workers to take days of unpaid leave) in order to balance the budget. This old lady stands up and demands they don't cut the bus program. The mayor flat out asks her where the money should come from and the lady responds "I don't know. Raise taxes or fire someone else!" She was promptly told that idea would not work and they ended the program.

It negates anything up to 3% depending what other taxes you are also paying where you live. You should be fine with 4%

It doesn't "negate" anything. If there was no raise, then the check would be LESS than it was before. Sure he won't see MORE money, but to say it negates it is simply stupid.

Haven't had a raise in nearly 2 years. I saw my check last Thursday (we get paid weekly). I expected it and it was what I expected. Time to hit the boss up for a raise so I can now feel better about my check going UP (from where it is now).

The point of a raise is so your net take home can go up by a couple of bucks or so is it not ? Yes without a raise you would be having less, but in essence your raise isn't the "raise" we are used to knowing about if your take home pay is slightly the same or less. Kind of throws some people off.

Lol funny thing is I asked HR about when my raise would go in affect. Ten minutes later on our home page was an article about "How new taxes may affect you ."

So who did the tax increase effect more the rich, middle or poor? Or in other words dident they lower the middle class taxes an tax the rich a bit more yet?

I don't know, mine is approaching $100 a paycheck though and I can still do a lot with $100.
