Our cat is f'n nasty... I don't know what to do about this...

So, Jenny and I have a cat named Daisy. She's a wonderful pet... never breaks anything, never gets on the counters/tables, doesn't scratch up the furniture, isn't the least bit aggressive, is very affectionate, etc.

There is a problem, though:

1. Daisy is fat

2. Daisy is too fat to clean her own ass

3. Daisy remedies this by doing the classic "butt drag" across the floor

You see, we thought she had worms. Cats and dogs will do that butt-dragging thing whenever they have a worm problem. We wormed her over and over again and she has not signs of them, so that's not the problem. We weren't sure why she did it until tonight:

She comes out after using the litter box and does "the drag". Then she walks off and there's a CAT BUTT STREAK on the carpet!!!!!!!!! So, it's that simple... she's whiping her ass on the carpet because she's too fat to get to it herself!!

WTF am I supposed to do about this? Shave all the hair off around her ass?

This is NOT acceptable!

Oh man, that sucks. I'd suggest putting down an area rug next to the box, and teach her to use that, but then you'd have one nasty area rug and it'd probably stink worse than the box after a while.

1) Your cat is likely fat because you fail to give it a proper diet. If your cat has a bowl down to eat of it's own free will, remove the bowl and put it away. Once in the morning and once in the evening, give the cat a proper portion of food and no more. She may not take it immediately the first few days, but once the cycle become clear to her and she realizes that she is hungry at these times, the process will take care of itself. Consult a veterinarian if you are not sure what a proper portion is. For a medium sized cat (not medium as in flab, but bone structure/height/etc.) about a half a cup should be a decent portion. If my adult dalmation eats 1 1/4 cups of food twice a day, 1/2 a cup of cat food is good... almost spoiling her.

2) If she cannot do it herself, then you either need to do it for her, or get used to cleaning carpets. Shaving a bit around her butthole so the poop doesn't stick to fur actually isn't a bad idea. She might not like it, but your carpets will.

3) This is a behavior that is hard to correct, but do some research on learned behavior in cats and apply it every time she scoots. Dogs are not fond of getting a spray bottle's mist to the face when they do something wrong, perhaps cats are similar. Non-agressive teaching should be used.
