Washington is NOT a right to work state:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_labor_law#Right-to-work_laws

Which is the underlying situation I believe that the previous poster was referring to.

Right-to-work deals with union membership; at-will deals with the employment relationship. The previous poster was talking about at-will (which is quite a ridiculous concept nowadays. Guyver states that you could fire someone for having "blonde hair" and that person could easily come back a sue for some sort of discrimination under Title VII and it would end up costing the company $10K just to get dismissed in summary.)

Hell... IT alone would have your ass in a sling for filling a room with balloons, as it messes with the static electricity in the environment and can cause issues with the computer.

I think at any of the companies I've worked at if you wanted to get somebody written up or fired because "their balloons are messing with the static electricity in the environment and it can really cause issues with the computer" we'd have taken turns holding you down and kneeing you in the balls to the applause of HR. That sort of sheer uppity nerdness cannot be tolerated.

"BUT THE STATIC ELECTRICITY!"

At-Will basically states - the employer is free to discharge individuals "for good cause, or bad cause, or no cause at all," and the employee is equally free to quit, strike, or otherwise cease work.

If a manager didn't like someone because they had blonde hair... They could easily fire them, and not put a cause... because At-Will employment can be terminated at any time.

Not uptight... i work in a company of 15,000 and have actually SEEN this. I have also seen HR walk people out the door for it.

You need to work for a different company then. The last company I worked for was double that size and we got away with plenty, as long as we picked on our friends and not the people we knew were uptight assholes.

At my last company, my idiot coworker tried to send me a net send message but instead, screwed up and sent it to the entire domain. The message simply said "Loser." Of course, it had her user name on the message so they tracked her down and wrote her up (she was not fired). Knowing the company's stupid logic, I had a feeling they'd talk to me even though I had nothing to do with it. Sure enough, they did talk to me and told me the aforementioned coworker said I "taught" her how to do it. I was not happy but nothing really happened to me either. I am still pissed at this person (who is still a friend, believe it or not) to this day for throwing me under the bus.

I got this same coworker on at my current company 4 or 5 months ago because despite the idiocy, she was a hard worker and I'd rather have a hard worker than a slacker who knew it all. Well, guess what? She had completely changed and was incredibly negative about everything and went whining to management about any little perceived slight. It really got on my nerves and I told her repeatedly that she needed to get a positive attitude and quit worrying about everyone else and tattling on them. Guess what? She got fired. Strike two against her -- she threw me under the bus at the former company and now got fired after I gave her a glowing reference.

Why was net send even enabled? Just curious.

nope. love the company i work for. The CEO is old school.. everyone on his floor wears Suit and Tie everyday regardless of their position. He doesn't put up with much crap.

Companies like that aren't for everyone... me... i like the company and like the people i work with.

The former coworker in my previous message did make out like a bandit. She got fired from here but ended up getting a job making 50% more and only having to work 3 days a week (12 hour shifts). When she got canned, I was really blunt with her and told her that her attitude sucked and she was turning into the type of tattletale coworker that she always used to bitch about.

To each his own. The last company I worked for was actually my favorite one (closely followed by my stint at Compaq) and was great until we had a large layoff that hit IT. After that, morale went way down and everything declined. We could also wear jeans. We did some pretty juvenile things in terms of pranks, but we all got along great and there was a stretch where I couldn't wait to get to work.

The current company is different and a little more formal, but people are very friendly. If the COO sees you, he'll stop you in the hall and ask you about your day, your projects, etc. He's a good guy and I used to report through him, so it is kind of cool being on a first name basis with the guy. The President is new and is still feeling people out.

Why? She keeps throwing you under the bus and you're still friends?

It was just that one time and I told her that she should've kept her mouth shut. Honestly, I am glad I don't work with her anymore because she has become one of those people who will hound you incessantly to cover her own ass. She is a nice person and great outside of work, but I'll never help her get a job anywhere I work again.

The funny thing is that at our old company, she was regarded as a great employee and worked her butt off. Like any other company, we had the usual brown-nosers who were the departmental tattle tales. She despised those people and would always complain to me about them. Fast forward to this position here, and she kept complaining about her coworkers to her manager even when I told her she needs to mind her own business and do her job with a positive attitude. It came to a head when she and another coworker got into it and she sent the manager this huge novel of an email and sent me a copy to read. When I saw it, I said "Seriously, please tell me you did not send this." Granted, in this case, her coworker was wrong, but she handled it very poorly and because she had a history of whining, management said "enough is enough" and canned her the week after she sent the email. After she got canned, I was diplomatic, but I did tell her how she screwed up and told her she was now exactly like the tattle tales we used to work with and she needs to knock it off and quit being a baby. Rough? Maybe, but I vouched for her and she screwed the pooch on a nice opportunity.

It was "byte me" here. No joke. 1998 and I was a noob in the windows 98 training class when it came through. net.exe was then removed from the company. I didn't make it into IT for another few years, but I figured that just disabling the messenger service would have the same effect. It did...
