At-Will basically states - the employer is free to discharge individuals "for good cause, or bad cause, or no cause at all," and the employee is equally free to quit, strike, or otherwise cease work.

If a manager didn't like someone because they had blonde hair... They could easily fire them, and not put a cause... because At-Will employment can be terminated at any time.

You should probably read up on McDonnell Douglas framework. All an employee has to do is show prima facie case by a preponderance of the evidence (read: allege a claim of discrimination, regardless of what the employer states.) That is enough to cause a financial hit on the employer, not to mention that the burden then shifts to the employer to show that it has a non-discriminatory reason, and after that the employee has a chance to show it's pretext.

We could bring in mixed-motive, but that complicates things even more.

People who don't deal with this day-to-day love to think that At-Will means "At-Will." It most certainly does not anymore.

Recently, a coworker decided to take a week long vacation to Jamaica. Upon his arrival in Jamaica he let all of us know how sorry he felt for us back in the good old United States and how awesome Jamaica is.

He is in for quite a surprise. His entire office has been flipped upside down and after tomorrow will be filled with nearly 1000 red, white, and blue balloons.
