Out of range error with Sony Monitor

Just got done putting system together, installed WinMe (temporarly) and everything was running fine, installed new hardware, one at a time, got on the internet for awhile, messed around....then I noticed that the screen was kinda flickering, or something, but it was noticable and was hurting my eyes. So I installed the drivers for my monitor (Sony Multiscan G400) and I had already installed the drivers for my vid card, Geforce2 GTS....so I messed around with the refresh rate and some other settings, but it gave me some error about changing the refresh rate, so I put it back to its default....so after an hour or so I restarted my computer and when it got done loading windows, after the splash screen, the screen was black and I got an error saying: Out of Scan Range.
So I got the Sony manual out and it said that it meant it could be the refresh rate, so I went into safe mode and made sure it was on default, or 60mhz.
Well everything was fine after I restarted, but it was running in 800x600 and with crappy color.
So I change the color to (true color) 32 bit, and I wanted it on 1024x768, when it tried to change it to that, I got the out of scan range error again, and it put it back to 800x600.

Might it be my old nvidia drivers, or is there something I don't know about? I've never had a problem before when changing my screen size.

Thanks for any help

Try changing the monitor type to "plug and play monitor"

It sounds like your graphics card is starting to crap out on you--or it could be the drivers. Your monitor is supposed to be at 1024X768 @ 85Hz. That's odd that you can't set your resolution and refresh rate to that.

Do you have a second computer or laptop? Maybe verify that your monitor supports that resolution and refresh rate to be sure your monitor isn't dying on you.

Well I don't know why it happened, but I went back to the display properties, advanced, and it said that my monitor had changed, and it let me changed it to 1024x768 at 120hz, the 120 was what it put on its own.

yeah ... 120Hz is what's causing your scan out of range. Run it at 85Hz.

Wait wait...sorry. I forgot the G400 is a 19 incher...you want to run it at something else... 1280X1024 I believe...but still at 85Hz.

i have that monitor. download inf for monitor from sony. max refresh is 85 at 1600x1200 and the weird 1280x1024(nonstandard distorting aspect ratio res) or whatever. at most other res it can do 120hz just fine. i use powerstrip to set refreshes in win2k
