Out of state license suspension?

I'm trying to figure out what actually happens if you get an out of state license suspension for not paying a speeding ticket out of state. I tried doing a Google search on this, and got tons of mixed opinions but little hard facts.

* Some people say that if you're license is suspended in one state, it's suspended in ALL of them.
* Some people say that it's only suspended in the state where you got the ticket.
* Finally, some people said that your license is technically suspended everywhere when you get an out of state suspension, but your odds of getting nailed on this are slim because the state DMV's do a lousy job of sharing license suspension records.

This is one of the few instances where a Google search was a total failure. Most of the links were to legal firms that want you to PAY UP to get proper advice, while others were overly opinionated bloggers who probably think that they're legal experts because they watched a lot of Night Court and Matlock reruns.

I'd love to hear some opinions on this from people who are cops or lawyers and actually KNOW what they're talking about. If anyone has links to some legit sites on traffic law (other than the DMV web sites, since I already read those), I'd like to read those as well.

A good many number of states now share points and license suspensions. They have these fancy things called computers now.

The answer to your question depends on the states.

Just pay the dang ticket and get on with life. Unless you like going to jail.

I once had my California license suspended for no insurance. I then went back to R.I. and tried to get a license and was refused. I had to get an insurance policy in California even though I didn't live there anymore to get my license re-instated. I then got a license in R.I.

The whole ordeal sucked

I almost had this happen about a year ago. I had an Oklahoma license, but I was driving in Georgia. I missed my court date out of simply marking down the wrong date, and when I went there they told me my license was suspended. Luckily Oklahoma hadn't processed whatever it was supposed to process, and I was able to pay the ticket without issue.

So, at least for Oklahoma and Georgia, it's applicable across states.

Heh. I paid the damn ticket already, although a part me wishes that I hadn't due to the insanely high fine that I got.

Between the actual fine and the New York DMV charges, I got nailed for over $1,000

I'm just wondering what my odds were of getting away with it were if I decided not to pay it!

Most states have a convenant agreement with other states to share license suspensions. If they did suspend your license in another state, it would be a pain in the butt to get it all straightened out. Just pay the ticket and get over it......

Years ago my wife's license was suspended in Colorado, and Nebraska knew about it.
