Sorry, baby daughter hit enter key...

Well silly old me had to prepare the frame to give as a gift today, so I manually loaded them minus thumbnails one-by-one so that they would be in the proper order...and since some of them were slightly larger than 640X480, the internal frame memory would take only 27 photos - not 36. Suprise!!!

We definitely need to find a shareware program to manage these pics...I tried EyeBatch but that only retains digcam EXIF info from a first generation picture, so that didn't help with my cropped and trimmed pics.

Any other ideas guys?

I'm currently using Pic2Pic Plus (http://www.wavelsoftware.com/pc2pcpls.htm) to resize, it was worth $14.99 to register it, as I will be resizing thousands of pics over the next few weeks. It will resize an entire directories' worth of pics really fast.

I'm using Photostudio (http://www.stuffware.co.uk) to recreate the EXIF thumbnails after Pic2Pic or PaintshopPro is used to modify the pics (both don't save the EXIF info). Running through an entire directory of 400+ files took about 10-30 sec to create the thumbnails, and another 14 sec or so to save the changes.

But I still need some type of Winblows program to Touch the files with sequential date/timestamps according to filename. When I used Photostudio to create the thumbnails for the whole directory, it ran through them all "too quickly", resulting in timestamps ranging across 14sec for 400+ files, and the PictureFrame seems to ignore the seconds of the timestamp.

Since this is being advertised as a "Geeksmas Day Special!!!" today at $99, I wonder if its price will be headed "North" tomorrow back to $119?

Spectre,

This is the legal and free way to manage your pics (except names and times):

1) Use IrfaView to batch resize the pics.
2) Use Photo Studio to batch add EXIF data to newly cropped and resized pics.

Both progs are freeware and the links and instructions for both can be found in this thread.
Make sure you follow the instructions for Photo Studio (again, can be found in this thread) exactly. For example, if something other than
EXIF data is checked as one of the options, then the thumbnails still won't show up on the frame.

This solutions works great and both my parents and my sister are now enjoying their Christmas frames!

Back in Stock.... 1300+ left. But they raised the price to $119.... but they removed the "Geek Special" allocation which means you can take an additional 10% off.

Ok I'm having CF card reader problems so I need your input.

When I got my KODAK frame I need a CF and a reader so I ran down to good ole best buy and scooped one up. Sadly, being the holdiay season, the picking were slim-to-none, so I had to grab a Lexar USB and PCMCI card reader. Well the PCMCI card works fine in my laptop, but the USB reader has no WinXP support so I'm generally screwed ($60!!!! too!) I talked to tech-support, who was less than useless, copying an pasting directions that didn't even apply to me. Long story short, they HOPE (and I quote "HOPE") to have XP drivers out in ~4weeks. Errrrrrrrr.... WRONG ANSWER.

So I need to return the Lexar reader, but now need to order/buy a USB reader that 100% has support for WinXP Pro. Any suggestions? I multi-format reader wold be nice as my camera is a SONY so it has a Mem-Stick, but far from neccessary.

Thanks in advance.

(and a belated Happy Holidays to all).
(lastly, I gotta say, these things are selling themselves, EVERYONE that sees it on my desk at work, or my desk and home all respond with the same reaction of how cool it is, where can I get one, "only a $100?", and a general... "cool".)

I picked up the Imation FlashGo at CompUSA for $69.99 and XP Pro recognized it without me having to install the driver (needed to for 98SE). You can find it for about $51 elsewhere and do the Amex Blue thing.

FlashGo

The cool thing about the FlashGo is that it is smaller than most of the other multi-readers since it uses individual adapters with the same slot.

My Free PNY CF reader from BB works in WinXP. However it sometimes slows down and freezes up.
Frame works great, price back up to $119 at CompGeeks.

My order is still being processed...it said that any orders placed after Dec. 21 and before Jan. 2 will be processed starting Jan. 2; in my opinion, that's on heck of a window, that's worse that the cable company.

Here is a free utility to modify files' time and date stamp. You can change all files to the same time and date or you can select them one at a time. You can not automatically sequence all of them.

download

Grandparents love these things.

If you have 4NT (may work with 4DOS too, I don't know), the following 3 line script I whipped up will force the timestamp on a list of files (one per line in filelist.txt) to today's date and an incrementing 1 minute apart time since midnight. This seems to order the files on a CF card by date in any order you wish

@echo off
set filenum=1
for %File in (@filelist.txt) do (touch /t%@maketime[%@eval[%filenum * 60]] %File & set filenum=%@inc[%filenum])

---- Edited ----

Ok, what crack smoker said the files were ordered by time/date???? It appears that the timestamp has no effect on order of the files...only the order in which they were written to the CF card. If I start with a blank card, the following 4NT script *DOES* seem to order the files as desired (replace E: with your CF drive letter of course):

@echo off
for %File in (@filelist.txt) do (copy %File e:\)

HomerBoy:

I have the "old" LexarMedia USB reader/writer (the purple USB one
that does smartmedia and compactflash). There are no official XP
drivers, but I installed the Win2K drivers and it works fine in XP.

Maybe you could do the same thing?

This turned out to be a real Christmas present hit! EVERYONE wants to look at it. I was concerned that the "geek factor" would be too high, but not so. I even got a request to order one for someone who doesn't shop online.

Thanks SteveNYC for the original post!

Close call!

Copying the "final" pictures to my 4MB CF card today. Something was fouled up and the frame order was all wrong, so stupid me decides "format the card".... *BAD*. I used Win2K's command line format, and that was all she wrote - neither the frame nor my digicam would recognize the card anymore

After trying tons of stuff in a panic, here's what worked for me:
-Use Win2K's Disk Administrator to delete the partition on the CF card
-Insert the CF card in my PDA (HP Jornada 548) and let it format

Now the card is recognized happily by Win2K and the frame again.

I know Win2K formatted the card with 1K allocation blocks and a 12-bit FAT - don't know what the PDA did but it's working now. Maybe some of those "incompatible" cheap CF cards would be compatible after the above routine?

HTH someone,
Richard

I got mine a couple of days ago, and found it nearly impossible to get images to show up in the frame - tried several of the programs listed in the thread for resizing the images, and finally called kodak. The tech I got on the phone didn't seem very technical, but suggested that I use the free download program from Kodak to adjust the images. The program isn't very robust, but did resize all my photos at once, and I got over 300 on a 32 mb CF card.

Removed the plastic from behind the frame, and am now very happy with the whole thing! - may even spring for another albeit 20 more now.

The link for the kodak app is here: http://www.kodak.com/global/en/service/software/applications/pictureSoftware/pictureSoftware.jhtml

Got mine in yesterday. Unfortunately I got the network version. Didn't have a CF reader so had to get one at Microcenter (along with 5 usb cables at $.99 a piece). Upgraded the firmware. Absolutely wonderful device. I got my sister the Kensington $50 frame for Christmas. It's good, but I saved the best (Kodak frame) for myself. I used Photoshop to resize the pics and the Kodak Picture Software to get the thumbnails to show on the frame. After taking the glass panel out I decided to put it back in as my room seems to have alot of dust and air particles around which are bound to be drawn to the electrostatic screen. Thanks Anandtech for the nice deal. Now only if I could get in on the great Macy's deals (I'm tempted to stay up late tonight to see if they get any more cheap products in stock).

Did anyone have the problem of a frame show up with a dead pixel? Mine showed up with a dead pixel, and compgeeks doesn't seem to want to do anything about it. Just wondering whether it's worth taking up with Kodak.

I tryed the Kodak Picture software from the website CIRC provided. Though downloading from the site was a bit of a pain, I got the 12MB program and it works great.

It resizes and allows you to choose thumbnail options, which are then all resaved in jpeg format.

I can now see all of the thumbnails on the frame software, and the software worked effortlessly.

Of the 4 or 5 programs offered up in this thread, this one worked the best for me.
