Outlook 2007 slower than 2003?

My boss at work said he was experimenting with Office 2007 and the one main thing that is keeping him from switching is Outlook is still slower than 2003, even in its final release version. Does anyone else agree with this? I will be getting it free in April but I'm still not sure if I'll want to switch or not.

Thanks.

It really depends on how much memory you have. I know that 2007 takes up a lot of RAM. I went from 2003 to 2007 with no noticeable issues. When I used the beta though I did notice how slow it has become. You eventually get used to it and unless he has like 256MB or even 512MB of memory then I doubt it will be a problem.

I'm pretty sure he has a gig.

"You eventually get used to it," meaning...it is a bit sluggish?

Edit: Remember we're only talking Outlook here, not all of Office 2007.

Just switched back from the beta of Office 2007 to Office 2003. Using Outlook 2003, noticeable speed difference in loading and doing data intensive duties with the two. Outlook 2003 is noticeably faster than 2007. I have 2GB of RAM btw.

I've seen Outlook 2007 run pretty slowly in an Exchange 2003 SP1 environment - anyone else running this?

At home with a POP account it's no slower than Outlook 2003 for me

It wasn't when I first started with it, but now I would say they are both pigs. Sending/receiving is no problem, but start-up takes a long time.

It doesnt seem any slower for me and I have been using it for about 2 weeks. I have a dual core machine and 2GB of ram, so that could be why I havent noticed any speed difference.

I've noticed it's slower. I use 2003 at work on a P4 3GHz PC with 1GB of Ram. At home I'm using the spec in my sig and Outlook 2007 and it is slower on my home system...go figure...I wonder if it's Vista thats the difference for me. Outlook 2007 works fine with Pop3 accounts also.

Outlook 2007 seems a bit slower for me as well. Upgrading from 512mb to 1gb of ram on my laptop definitely helped though.
Outlook 2007 does occasionally give me a "A data file was not closed properly" message when I launch it sometimes. Even though I close outlook the same way every time. Not sure what the deal with that is.

From my experience Outlook 2007 is a bit slower than 2003. Nothing drastic but noticable.

My issue with it is when I open a message with a link in it and click the link it doesn't immediately open a IE window. SOmetimes it takes 10 seconds or so then opens the link. It has a "scrolling" bar (almost like the small indicator at the bottom of IE7 except differeent colors/look) or something near the top of the email message window that runs across the screen when I click on the link.

I know my internet is fine because during the 10 seconds i can manually open an IE window and everything is fine.

Check the following: Tools -> Options -> Preferences Tab (should be what shows first) -> Email Options (upper right) -> Advanced Email Options (middle) -> Make sure "Show an envelope icon in the notification area" box is checked.

If you're also not getting the new email pop-up alert in the bottom-right, that option is right below, with a "Desktop Alert Settings...." to customize it.

Hope that helps.

I'd check to make sure your SMTP server is correct, and call your ISP to see if they require SPA (Secure Password Authentication). If so, you'll need to make sure you have that option selected so it will properly authenticate with the server before it will allow you to send an email.

As for me, I used Outlook 2003 for a few years, and now that I'm on 2007, I can look back and say that 2003 was a little quicker, although the difference for me was negligable. But I'm a completely low-level user, strictly for email. No calendar, no contacts, nothing.

The entire 2007 suite is boat slow. I have 15K RPM drives and 2GB memory, 2003 office apps popped up in like 0.1-0.5 seconds. 2007 takes about 2-3. Thats ages.

Your computer sucks then, because my Office 2007 apps take less than a second to pop open when the computer is fully booted and sitting idle.

Yes I have noticed this also. I mean I want to have outlook running all the time but its such a resource hog, anyone have a solution other than buy more ram?

I've got 2gigs and 07 is sure slower. Especially with Hotmail. It would freeze in the beginning for like 20 seconds. Very sluggish as in what was expected from Microsoft. Hopefully they'll fix that,as it's just BAAAD

Make sure you guys have installed the patch on Microsoft Update to address the performance issues with Outlook. It helps a lot! Some info here

Just started using it, Outlook.exe is showing 100mb in task manager with default settings. I don't notice it being any slower than 2003 on my system, but still, that's pretty rough.

I believe the issue when you click on a link in an email and it takes a while to open is because of built-in phishing security. I think that red scrolling bar is telling you it's "scanning" the link or something similar. I've only been using Office 07 for a couple weeks but that what I figure it is.

2007 seems to be better multi-threaded while checking email -- when downloading messages, 2003 is very sluggish about updating the preview pane. 2007 does seem to manage this much better (granted, I have CloudMark SpamNet loaded, so that may be affecting things).

Otherwise, speed boost in new C2Duo machine about makes up for overall more sluggish Outlook / Office 2007.
