anyone know if there's a way to have outlook automatically delete email within a specific folder based on age?

I get about a dozen 5-10MB emails every day. one or two days worth isn't so bad, but if I'm out on vacation, my mailbox is totally full before I know it. I already have a rule created to dump all of these messages in a folder dedicated only to them, but now I'm trying to figure out if there's a way to get any email within that folder that's older than, say, 48 hours to be deleted (ideally, deleted-deleted, not just dumped into the trash can)

You can setup automatic "archiving" which will keep from filling up your mailbox on, I'm assuming, your Exchange mail server.

Right click on your folder and go to properties. On the AutoArchive tab you can set the options you want. Click the Archive this folder using these settings radio button. Change the time range to what you want and click the Permanently delete old items radio button.

I realize this is a semi old thread, but in order for this to delete the archived items in trash, does the profile have to be logged into, or will this happen automatically, "behind the scenes" if you will?

By default Outlook only archives when the client is open. I'm not sure if there's a way to get it to run at the server level.

Edit: This is from my experience with 2003. Things might have changed with later versions.

Thanks for confirming that. I'm pretty sure that is how it is set up. I also found out that in Oulook 2010, under File>Options>Advanced, there is a check box for "Empty Deleted Items Folders When Exiting Outlook" May have to give this a try as well.
