Outlook Express Help Needed Please....

I want to reinstall Windows XP and want to save the old emails in Outlook Express by transfering them to my other PC since they are networked together. Can anyone tell me where my old emails might be located? There is a folder called Outlook Express but they don't appear to be in there. Thanks for any help you can give me.

They are stored in the identies folder located under documents and settings. The full path is here
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{random generated number}\Microsoft\Outlook Express

May have to turn on all the hidden folder options to see all the folders

They can be stored anywhere you want them. The control for that in OE is Tools/Options/Maintenance, and then click on the Store Folder button. That will show you where they are currently - and you can change that to any place you like. I keep all mine on an external drive.

OK, I found them. Are they DBX files? They look to be about the size of what's in there. So if I saved that OE folder on my other PC, could I put it back into the same folder after I reinstall XP and my old emails would return? Thanks.

Yes - they are DBX files. You got 'em.

OK, now I'm stuck. Since my PC's are networked together, I created a new folder in the new PC's OE where I want to put my old emails and called it "Original PC Inbox". Then , I copied the DBX file for the Inbox from the old PC into the new PC's OE folder and they are there.

I put the DBX file in the same folder on the new PC that I took it out of from the old PC under Identities/random number/Microsoft/Outlook Express. However, they don't show up when I go to OE on the new PC and click on that new folder. I must be missing one small step. Can you help me finish this please?

Yes, I believe you should do the import wizard, point it to the folder from the other PC that had all your email folders (inbox.dbx, deleted.dbx, etc, etc)

Got it done, I went through more steps than necessary before finding the import tool in OE. Thanks for the help guys, much appreciated.

One last thing, it seems my address book is gone. Can anyone tell me where this is stored?

The Address Book is sort of buried. It is a separate program that works with Outlook Express, and stems from WAB.EXE. The file is generally located as foolows:

Open Outlook Express - then open the Address Book, and hit HELP. Then hit ABOUT, and it will tell you where the file is.

It is easy to back up and restore. Use the File/Export/Address Book function to create a backup. Then you can also import one the same way.
