open messenger go to prefernces, options or whatever and disable everything that might encourage it to start up with windows and to run hidden(first two options under preferences.)

Two idiots believe one can actually "shut up" the other on the net. What a bunch of geeks

cause you know they talk like that to real people all the time.

Anyways, the best way to do it is remove messenger totally cause it always seems to come back somehow and haunt you. I think this worked fine for me link That is of course if you know you won't need it.

OR, if you use AIM, set that as default messenging program in your MS program access settings and in AIM prefs since AIM seems to be less instrusive if configured correctly. But then again, the new AIM has some spyware (wildtangent) so you might want to check out oldversion.com

XPanti-spy has a setting that will disable autostart of messenger or uninstall it.
But MS seems to turn it back on in almost every update/patch they issue.
but XP anti-spy will turn it back off for you again

Use XP-AntiSpy to disable that feature as well as many other annoying XP features.

XP-AntiSpy is a little utility that lets you disable some built-in update and authentication 'features' in WindowsXP.
For example, there's a service running in the background which is called 'Automatic Updates'. I don't know what this service transfers from my machine to other machines on the internet, especially the MS ones. So I play it safe and disable such functions. If you like, you can even disable these functions manually, by going through the System and checking or unchecking some checkboxes. This will take you approximately half an hour. But why wast time when a little neat utility can do the same in 1 minute? This utility was successfully tested by lots of users, and was found to disable all the known 'Suspicious' Functions in WindowsXP. It's customiseable, but comes up with the Default settings, which are recommended. This utility is DONATIONWARE! This means, you don't have to pay anything for this program and you can give it to anyone who's interested in it, as long as you don't sell it. If you find this tool useful, and wanna gimme something back, think about donating a small amount of money.
Thanks.
