What's up with this "you must put in a phone number" crap? Also finding my facebook pic and attaching it to my emails is another big wtf moment - time to close down my accounts I guess.

It sucks when a service you've used for a while suddenly goes to crap.

What?

Did you turn on two-factor authentication or something?
Do you not want your FB image linked, or you do want it linked?

I didn't want it linked; I disabled the feature, but I found it highly annoying that Hotmail just decided to link it in out of the blue.

Hotmail went to crap MANY MANY years ago

I only use it as a spam email and give it out to companies/registrations etc.

Microsoft is doing that on all of their services to make them hack-proof. Instead of on-system verification, they'll send you a text code if you want to make changes. I do think you can turn that feature off though.

What about people that don't want text messages being sent to their phone (e.g. phone number on yet another database), or only have landlines, etc.?

The message implied that this change was mandatory.

They push it as it adds extra security. It is optional though. My bank has started a similar practice.

The redesign has been good for awhile. The aliases are really handy, I can hand out different ones based on category. The filters are pretty good now too.

RE: the phone number...you don't have to enter one. So don't. Or do. And/or the Authenticator app.

You are already on so many databases why will one more hurt especially if it stops your account getting hacked.

As for people that only have landlines both of them said it is ok as they don't have email either.

They are forcing me to use a phone number which can receive texts. Previous to this it was optional.

There is a thread about a bunch of people getting the same thing here:

Anybody have a good recommended free email service?

I get charged $.25 per text. Screw companies needing to text my phone, they can suck it.

I have not linked it to Facebook so I don't have the second problem, while the first one never presented itself.

I'm not sure what your problem is. They are upgrading their service to provider more quality to the average person. Most people don't pay for texts, so I guess by your terms you can go suck it and find a new email service. You're acting like you've been ripped off when the account was free. Entitled idiot.

Checked on two different accounts that don't have a phone number attached to them, no number required?

Had neither issues for my old hotmail account.

Was one of my original emails so I mainly keep it because of that.

I already have a gmail account, but thanks for the suggestion.

I mostly had used this hotmail account for when I sign up for some crap that I don't care about, e.g. free magazines, so the account is constantly spammed regardless.

I was mostly just surprised that they suddenly require a text on the account, out of the blue, where my other hotmail account has no such restriction. They give a scary-sounding message when you log in, saying "you have 4 more days to secure your account with a phone number" or something along those lines. I signed up to the account with a fake name, maybe that's why it got flagged.

amassing people's phone numbers in a massive database that links people's mobile phones (and thus their real world location) to every email that they've received or will receive is a massive jackass big brother co*k stroking move.

microsoft offered free accounts for years and years and now that people are attached to their email addresses they are strong arming this orwellian spy and datamining monstrosity on everyone.

his reaction is justified and common.
