Got a canned response from Seagate, hopefully they update the warranty page.

NICE!!! I figured these were faster than previous generations from the higher density but haven't seen any numbers. How old were those WD drives? The burst rate of course suffers from 2MB cache (WD800BB) and the ATA100 interface versus 16MB/300 (effective). Western Digital doesn't change their product numbers regardless of platter density or generation, so more recent drives can have 80GB single platter, while older ones can have 2+ platters.

Yeah and the average read rate is only 6MB/s different between those two hdtach screens, measuring by max burst rate at the optimal read point of a drive is more for fun than to get a real world performance figure

I received a 10 in a 9 box. Sent into Seagate and they told me to send in the info, I did and haven't heard anything from them except the just use the serial number and pn number on the box. I thought they would change the data base but so far I still get it listed as an oem drive. Anybody else since the first guy get theirs changed?

The "5QH????" #'s are the same the P/N #'s and the ST #'s are different.

I was thinking the 5QH's were the ones having the problems with the warranty info.

Nice, I have definitely noticed a difference in load times in games with this drive. BF2 takes 45 seconds to load the map and verify my client data. That's pretty darn quick.

Yeah the burst is just fun to look at Never did notice the average read rate. The RAID was a little more consistent across the table, while the SATA starts high but drops off pretty hard at the end. Overall will be quite noticeably faster although... oh yeah just started up HL2... that Load Time is MUCH shorter! and Holy crap, just unplugged those 2 WDs and the difference in sound is amazing! POS loud WDs... Who wants some 80GBs

My experience has been the same. Canned responses all saying they can't do anything and I should save the box. Tonight I am going to get on the phone and try to actually reach a person. I appreciative the deal, but I don't trust Seagate for one second to honor the warranty when the box doesn't match the drive.

should we all just contact the BBB or our respective state's attourney general? seems like a case of false advertising to me! do the terms of the warranty in the box specify that item's packaging must be retained? @ the very least Fry's falsely misrepresented the item in sayin 5 year warranty on their site... any lawyers in the crowd care to weigh in?

Fry's did not misrepresent the drive as it is in a retail box that states the warranty length on it. IMO it is a problem with Seagate. My idea was to get a journalist involved. This has been a long term problem at Seagate and it is past time they fixed it.

This post made me interested, so I went ahead and checked mine just now:

They updated mine too! Awesome, It shows the full 5 year warranty for both model and both part #'s. What a relief.

P.S. I sure am glad I bought this HDD. There wasn't any deal that came close to this one on BF and I've been filling this thing up with videos and games for the past month + and it has been a flawless performer. It runs at a cool 29C most of the time even while recording video files from my PVR. Of course there's a front fan in my case blowing almost directly onto the drives for my system..

Great drive, excellent warranty

Did you guys send in copies of your invoice, UPC and pic of drive label, or did they just update it without you having to do anything?

I have all invoices/packing slips, but some drives are in computers already and some boxes were already tossed (or had rebates done) before I knew about this problem, so I know my info is incomplete.

Frys.com is on my shht list for now because of shipping me an empty cardboard box for my last order (of two hard drives, go figure). Their phone system disconnects the call more often than not. 1-877-688-7678, press 2 for customer service, get disconnected. Wash, rinse, repeat.

I sent them copies of my receipt and a jpg of my HD, all in pdf. I first reported here that they fixed it quickly but I was wrong. I hadn't got around to checking it again until I saw this post. Thanks again. I will let my boss know, as he had two of these 400GB drives in question with the same problem. He also sent in pdfs of everything.

I emailed Seagate customer support and told them about the issue. In the email I gave them the part#'s and model #'s from the drive and the box and explained that two different numbers reflected different warranties. I got a reply that they would honor the 5 year warranty. I kept the email and the box obviously, but since then it appears that they have updated it.

The email I recieved back from Seagate said that they were aware of the problem, so I'm not sure if my email was the cause for the fix or that they are just gradually updating the model #'s in an effort to fix the problem in general. Either way, the fact that they have updated is a huge relief and makes me a super happy customer. From this point on, for me, it's Seagate drives. These things perform like freaking beasts too

Actually my post above wasn't accurate. My boss did not send in any pdf for his two 400GB SATA drives, and they were both updated to reflect a 5 year warranty. So, it looks like Seagate is doing this on it's own, and people do not need to contact Seagate over their warranty. They just need to check back occasionly to see if their warranty has been updated.

You have everything you need:

To get your serial number and part number from the drive, use the last free version of Everest.
http://www.oldversion.com/download.php?idlong=b0e1140fe6e5a7bda6688b67229e3da2
Look under "Storage" under "SMART".

To get the part number on the box, find the .9 equivalent drive to your .10 drive from the Seagate web site and the part number is on the page. The serial number on the box matches the serial number on the drive. To confirm the part number on the box, enter it and the same serial number on the Seagate warranty check page. If it shows a 5-year warranty (or whatever is left), then, you have the right box part number.
