Outside of AT Forums, when was the last time you've seen someone likely mentally ill

At In-N-Out today as I was waiting in line this pasty nerd stereotype exited the bathroom and went between myself and another guy to leave the building. As he did I could hear him mutter (roughly paraphrased; it happened a few hours ago) "Don't look at me you motherfucking fat son of a bitch, stop making fun of me or I'll fucking kill you..." in whispered confidence, the restaurant floor undoubtedly quaking as he unflinchingly stared it down. Didn't notice a bluetooth on him either, although I only saw the left side of his face.

In DC a couple years ago. I was at the train station, and woman with a beard was yelling incomprehensible shit to no one in particular. When I say a beard, I don't mean a few stray hairs, or a heavy mustache, I mean a thick beard I was almost jealous of, but mine's still better :^D

Last summer I was in a rehab place getting my meds balanced ( I take a lot of meds for my various conditions). There were a few other patients that were rather unusual. But the real lunatics were the medical staff. Wow. Talk about people that couldn't handle the real world!! Regular staff in my other hospital stays aren't quite so frightening. And I'm sure there are rehab places that don't have that kind of doctors. But this is where my MD's recommended and what Medicare covered.

Every single day, multiple times a day. I essentially live in the ghetto, so I walk by drug addicts and the mentally ill on a daily basis.

Guy who owns the house across from us is mentally ill. That guy is off his rocker. We try to avoid him as much as possible.

San Fransisco, around the Oracle One conference that I was attending. Several women with shopping carts filled with junk and muttering to themselves. One guy on a street corner bent over and absolutely still. Another guy wearing a pink top and a pink skirt. Another guy at the same office also went and was treated to a guy masturbating in a BART train.

I think the "normal " people I deal with daily are wacko enough.

What kind of meat is in this chicken soup?
That'd be chicken, ma'am.
But, chicken is white.
Chickens also have dark meat, ma'am.

I have signs in front of each dish telling what it is. The placement of the heated shelf above the buffet means I can't see when people point at something. Roughly half are unable to read the name of the item from the card in front of them.

I put out 4 different soups in a warming chafer every day. They have lids on to help keep the soups hot. Half of the people have no idea what to do with the lids when they want soup. So, rather than putting the lid on the counter in front of the soup or next to their tray on the serving line, they most often attempt to balance the lid on the rounded handle of the soup next to the one they want which then falls to the counter with a crash.

We have both small salad plates and dinner plates next to our salad bar which is on a separate line devided by a wall from our hot line. About half the people whether they are new or have been eating here for years, bring the large dinner plates from the salad bar to the hotline. Even though there are hot dinner plates over the hotline.

These are just a few aberrations of my "normal " guests.

For example--there is a guy that lives across the street from me. Severe, severe OCD/Turrets/whothefuckknows what.

every night...some time between 9pm and 12am, he steps outside and yells invectives at whatever entity or idea has slighted him.

Fuck you, Toronto! Fuck you, Egypt! Fuck you, window coverings! Shut the fuck up! Fuck you, San Antonio!

always followed by several slammed doors, another scream or two.

etc.

I've watched him hang out on the corner with a camera on a tripod filming traffic. I've watched him run up the street, wearing his backpack, and the process of trying to get inside his house--up and down the steps several times, turning around to check out who is watching him. knocking on the door several times, unlocking, locking, unlocking the door.

I live in San Francisco. Every single day pretty much. There are so many homeless people who are completely out of their minds.

I saw a guy walk into BJ's Wholesale Club 5 minutes before closing and putting on blue surgical gloves, he had on a Member's Only style jacket, Chino High Waters skin tight and a strange appearance. Obviously a germaphobe.

Heard a story from a friend about a woman that shops at a grocery store he worked in, the woman goes in late, store is open 24 hours, she would lay a sheet over the conveyor belt and place her groceries on it, the checkout person and bagger could not touch her items, she had to wave them across the barcode scanner herself and bag them herself, otherwise she would have a fit. I guess the fact that someone handled the shit several times till it got in her cart did not register.

Oh yeah my Mother in law is mentally ill too, I have to deal with her shit on a daily basis.

A nurse friend of mine met a guy today in the pysch ward that was talking to his shoes. She asked him what their names were and was told "They don't like you". That was disturbing on several levels, so she moved on.

I hear those shoes have the death sentence on 12 systems.

Yeah pretty much everywhere I've lived, I've seen people in this situation. It's tough because they may not have a family safety net to fall back on, and if you're strapped with a mental illness, taking care of yourself through government programs, soup kitchens, etc. may not always make sense to you. It's always hard to see it in person though, but at the same time there's not really much you can do since technically they are adults and you can't fix their lives for them.

On a tangent, I had lunch at IKEA yesterday. It was really sad to see how many people you could tell were homeless there (99 cent breakfast), and how many old people who were there, alone, eating all by themselves. Kind of heartbreaking; I wish our society had a better system for helping people who are homeless/alone/mentally ill, especially with the recent shootings that have pretty much all involved some type of mental illness. We really need to get on the ball about that...

A lady I've seen driving on the way to work several times. What sets her off is someone getting in front of her. Not cutting her off, simply getting in her lane in front of her usually with several car lengths to spare. She will flash her brights and zoom up to tailgate them all while what I assume is swearing and waving her hands everywhere.

My neighbors daughter came to stay with her for a few weeks. She was coming off of a pretty bad drug habit and thought that everyone was conspiring against her, also that all street lights had monitoring equipment installed and would change color when you mentioned illegal activities nearby. . . Even the lights on the private property where we live. She also regaled me with the story of how she had cats and how some tweakers shaved their butts and raped them. . . I later discovered that she never owned any cats to her mothers knowledge. She crashed over at my place a few times, and over at a buddies house, he really wanted to screw her and before she left she told him we had been banging like rabbits. He got pretty pissed and I had to tell him she had lied. I don't know how much of her behavior could be attributed to the drugs and how much was just crazy though.
