All I can say is that's it's this ill-informed, frightened people act that everyone's putting on that's causing it to happen right now. That's right! I said it. As this issue grows, it's only causing more and more businesses to consider it as an option.
I worked for Sykes Enterprises, a company very much in the sector sending jobs overseas right now. Since the beginning of the year, they've closed about 1/4 of our domestic call centers with more to come. I just started a new job working for the Government this week, so I am very much personally involved with this entire scenario being painted. I searched for and found the job because I was concerned that we would be shut down some time in the future and I wasn't willing to deal with that. However, you must also realize that the people in places like India, Costa Rica and the Phillipines that are doing these "new jobs" are not doing some kind of spectacular, knock out job at the moment. Some of our clients are considering settings things back to the status quo and bringing their business back to the US already and they're barely 6 months into it.
I guess what I'm trying to say is, the more this issue is in the public eye, the more businesses are going to consider it for themselves. America has become a nation wrought with sensationalism, both good and bad, and anytime sensationalism rears its ugly head, someone takes notice and tries to emulate the actions. The CEO and founder of Sykes himself sounded somewhat frustrated by our clientele more or less forcing his business into a situation of moving offshore. He's still of the mind that we can do it better and in the long run, cheaper than offshore areas can and I believe him when he says that.
