Heres the thing.. my computer had been locking up randomly for 11months before I had actually taken it into the shop. A few days before I'd planned to finally take it in, my ATI Radeon 9800 Pro bit the dust. I take it to the local shop-it was clear the 9800 Pro was the problem. But what they had told me and logged, was that the video card was actually causing the lock ups. I took their word, bought the nVidia 6600GT (I wanted to buy direct from ATI but they have only the "all in wonder," which is not necessary for my needs.
I get the computer back, I'm told they've updated the BIOS and chipsets. Before I'd actually turned the computer on, I installed a new sound card (Blaster Audigy LS). BF2 was running at about 1/2 the performance it should have been, as well as CS:S. I've tried many other games and they cannot perform up to what they could before the 9800 Pro died. I thought it might be the soundcard, so I uninstalled the drivers and card, and it didnt make a difference. I understand that the 6600GT is slightly faster, but not by much. I have noticed a difference in the over all computer speed as well. I figure its because of the BIOS update. I go into the BIOS, look and performance is set to "Low." So I set the BIOS to the "High Performance Defaults" -putting performance speed to Turbo (Low, Fast, Turbo, Ultra-Turbo - Disabling dynamic overclocking). It first froze on desktop load, the second and third time I had memory dumps (blue screen). So I set them back to the "Default BIOS settings."
And thats where I stand currently, all drivers updated, video card image settings set to performance, many necessary tweaks have been made, and putting up with crappy performance. Can anyone help with this problem?
