Well over the last couple of days I have been messing around with my processor OCing it and seeing at what temps it would run at. I got it to 2.75 from stock 2.2 with stock voltage and the idle temp was 35c and load temp was 42c. just to be safe until i was going to replace the amd compound with artic silver 5 i only oc'd it to 2.61 where it ran at 34c idle and 41c load. after i changed it to artic silver at 2.61 my idle is 39c and load 47c. i even tried defaulting back to the normal at 2.2 and the temp was still higher. what could be wrong?
first off, the 'compound' or TIM contains wax
when you apply the TIM and let the processor get hot, the wax melts
it fills in all the microscopic cracks and crevices
there is only one way to get it out
you have to lap the heatsink
you have not done this
so you are going to have to get busy
get some 600 and 400-grit wet/dry sandpaper
take the fan off your HSF
put the 400grit on a mirror or similarly smooth surface
put some water on it
with even pressure, start moving the bottom of the heatsink around in circular, smooth motions
go both clockwise and counterclockwise
use plenty of fresh water
go till you seem to stop making progress
repeat with the 600grit
you'll know you're there when all the grooves on the bottom of the heatsink are no longer visible to the naked eye
it will appear shiny and polished
takes about an hour
when you're done, rinse it thoroughly and clean with acetone
THEN put on AS5 strictly according to instructions. it is really hard to keep from using too much, so be careful of that.
