I'm in for one - seems to be a pretty good cooler.
Good find with the free shipping, thanks!

I use one in my third rig, cools few degrees better than Vendetta 2 I got. considering v2 is a strong DHT cooler, this one is quite good.

I bought this cooler for 29 bucks at fry's yesterday and have it installed on my q6600. The temp difference is really nice compared to my arctic cooling freezer 7 pro.

...or the heatsink, maybe you could do like a reverse lap type deal. You may need some 60 grit and a power tool for 5mm though!
The highest point on the cooler is the heatpipes, and removing 5mm would puncture them quite easily I think.

Perhaps a stupid question, but is there anything in heatpipes besides air? Given the unlikely scenario where you actually did cut 5mm off of your heatpipes could you seal them up again with something? I'm afraid that I am an amateur at the heatpipe trade.

I use the Hyper 212+ and like it a lot. Keeps my 965 (140W version) OC'd at 3.8ghz under 50C @ load and only paid $30 for it.

Whatever you do DONT cut the heatpipes. They do have fluid in them which helps the heat transfer process. Without it they are essentially worthless. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heat_pipe

And just for comic relief: What happens when you do cut them

In my antec 300 the heatpipes have to be less then 1/2 inch away from the side of the case.

They don't actually have any fluid inside them. Theoretically they should, but I have seen a few articles that checked dozens of heatsinks from different manufactures, and there was no liquid in any of the pipes. Maybe they have some sort of invisible gas or something, but I don't really believe that is the case. I guess none of that matters though, as breaking the seal will still likely ruin the heat dissipation.

Even the more expensive ones? I have seen the super cheap HSF's have no liquid inside them, but even the expensive ones too? OUCH

You could lap the bottom of the HSF, lap the top (tips of the HS tubes, even if just getting 1 or 2 mm off) and then sand down the side of the case, all in all should be able to come up with 4 or so mm... but sure is alot of work

Isn't the Vendetta 2 a rebadged Xigmatek 1283? If so, that's impressive performance for a $25 heatsink.

yes I think the 4 heatpipes lets it do better than V2, although V2 has bigger pipes. also the mounting system is better than V2's that might also contribute to the better temp.

They used to have mercury inside of them for efficient heat transfer. ROHS compliance though dictates you can't have it in your products. I believe methanol would be fine though. Remember that heat pipes aren't filled with a liquid, they are only something like 0.5% of the volume of the entire pipe. The fluid boils and travels away from the heat source, cools, and condenses and returns. What goes against this concept though is they are all mounted sideways... so gravity wouldn't bring the fluid back down to the base of the HSF... ugh.

I do find it interesting that the heatpipes are basically empty now if that's true. I always wonder why the heatpipes aren't just solid copper or aluminum cored if they are empty.

Anyone received their heatsink yet? Nothing is even showing on the tracking number they sent me and I ordered on the 17th.

This heatsink works better with a push-pull configuration. I'm doing that with some cheapo Yate Loon D12SL-12s and my Q9550 doesn't go past 42C with Prime95 for 30 minutes. Impressive results, I would say.
