Was the second digit in the SN a "8"? Just to confirm that "48" translates to 851.

Well I don't get something.

All you people you state you got one of these drives for $79.99 without the $50 mail in rebate tell me one thing.

In my local ad, they have the drive at $179- $50 instant rebate, then - a $50 mail in rebate.

For those of you here who stated you got one for $79 out the door no rebate, I looked at the office max online ad for your town, and I still see the same rebate situation. Please explain. Is there something the store is doing to not make you pay the $129 and then deal with the $50 MIR?

Or is it that since they are out of the advertised unit, they are substituting another brand, hence no rebate available, etc.

thanks for the info

Most stores are out of the advertised drive on which the rebate applies; therefore, they're subbing a completely different drive in lieu of the one that's on sale. Since the rebate will not work on subbed drive, the stores are giving an instant rebate so that the final price is as advertised.

You wouldn't have the proper UPC. It's my guess that MagicSpin bailed out of the deal at the last minute, and OM dealt with PacificDigital to cover the deal. That's just my guess. OM definately went up a notch in my books for coming thru with this deal. I'll make sure to throw some business their way, like for the hack cables for the ghetto digi-cam.

Yes....I agree with Richard...that is pretty much what they told me.

total cost: $85.xx out the door.

BTW...can anyone tell me if the 851s will eventually be able to burn DVD-Rs at 8x with firmware upgrades? Currently the specs (per Lite-on website) say only DVD+ is rated at 8x.

Also...which is the better format "-" or "+" for backing up my movies?

thanks,
Mattlock

The 8X Lite-On and the 8X Optorite(MagicSpin) are really very comparable. Nearly the same exact specs. Neither of them enjoy as good of a reputation as Plextor but both are pretty good. DVDHelp has both drives rated in the mid 7's.

The Lite-On features bit setting, while the optorite offeres HD-Burn. Both are rumored to eventually support 8x -R recording with firmware updates. The original complaints with both drives were that they had some problems with -R media. Both drives appear to be much better since firmware updates.

My OM still have MagicSpins in stock and will not sub. I got the MagicSpin for $64.99 with MIR so I can't complain. I would've been nice to not have to send a rebate in, but for $64.99 I'm pretty happy. So far the MagicSpin(Optorite) has worked perfectly. The HD-Burn worked perfectly fitting 1.4GB of data on a CD-R.

I was able to trade the BTC in for a liteon at another store. I got on with the black bezel 811s,but oh well im gonna keep this one.Man this drive is short, about an inch shorter than normal drives.
The manager gave me the run around on the drive and the hp subs but finally came through with the drive. They are pulling the subs off the shelfs and act like they dont know anything about subs, and then when you call them on that they tell you they dont have stock. That sucks.

What's the limit for the rebate? 1 per customer?

Awww, dangit. I didn't realize that the MagicSpins were Optorite. I really would have liked to have HD burning. Oh well, what am I complaining about? I *ONLY* got a 8X DVD burner for $80.

I am sure that the rebate is one per household but I will just send the other one to my parents house....

I got the sub in Corvalis Oregon. They knew what was going on there, and were very kind. Way to go Office Max!

In Lake Park FL I must have the most lame OM in the country. They have neither DVD burner, never had the substitute and laughed when I suggested substitute. They never had the disks either and shrugged at substitute.

yeah after I posted the question, I figured out that the MIR wouldn't apply to the sub'd drive.

I just got back from the Tukwila WA OM with a Model 811s beige drive and a spindle of 25 Imation DVD+R's for $99.09 out the door.
The lite-on (Pacific Digital) rang up at $199.99 before the price adjustment. Now thats what I call a Smokin deal.
Throw on a $10 spindle of dvd+r's and it can't be beat.
