I think it's a "reputation" thing going back to CDRW drives. Lite-On drives worked well; BTC drives did not. Sort've like "Why is a Honda better than a Yugo"

Anyone have the link that shows the compatibility list between the burner and the different types of media and what speed they can burn at?

Found a firmware hack to burn those 4X RICOH discs at 8X on the 851 HERE
This absolutely worked for me. Thanks again Richard.

Is there a similar hack for the 811s?

No hack is needed for the 811S. It can already burn RITEKJPNR01 (Ricoh 4x DVD+R) media at 8x.

Hey just wanted to say thanks and confirmed that I got a Lite-On 811 Pacific Digital from OM (San Jose, CA). Woohoo!! Thanks AT!! I installed it last night, upgraded to latest firmware, and burned a TDK (ricohjpn01) 4x dvd+r at 8x. But while playing in my PS2, it skipped. I've burned with a NEC 1100A onto the same discs and no problems before. I don't know if this is because of the drive or the media burning at a higher speed than rated. I also had a file I/O problem ripping friends season 1 disc 1 with DVD Shrink 3.1.2. Anyone else having problems?

Completely OOS all over the Bay Area - Mountain View, Campbell, Santa Clara, Milpitas, San Jose (monkied must have got the last one! )

All of them were doing the subs apparently, but they're OOS too!

LOL, sorry simo. You know what, just as I was checking out, they told me I got the last one. But I looked across the register and I see an OM employee getting the same one!! It's like they're stashing them away for themselves. So you could try San Jose again (off of Saratoga) and maybe you'll get lucky. Good luck!

zaku, my ps2 is stock and is one of the older generation ones (maybe generation 1 or 2?). I've been ripping movies with dvd shrink 2.3 and burning on my nec 1100a and everything has played on it. I haven't backed tried any games yet though.

I got the drive yesterday in DeKalb OM. havent opened it, but according from previous posts it seems like I got the Liteon 851 drive and not the 811 as some of you guys are reporting.

Any big differences? Ive been searching through reviews and it seems the only difference is the CD-R burning speed if i remember.

Well, you aren't going to be able to burn 4X media at 8X with the 851 without hacking the firmware. Look on this page at the posts by Pinan in which he replied to my earlier message. As I mentioned before, the 811 is preferable.

adding to your list of OOS Bay Area stores... Walnut Creek says they're not doing substitutions, and Concord says they're out.

I love this board! I got a beige 851S which has exactly the same bezel as my 52x32x52 lite on CDRW. Needless to say, I now have a black 8X Dual format DVDRW for $86 out the door and my wife has a beige CDRW! What a great deal! Did I mention that I love this board?

Drokk

P.S. Newegg has the black 52X32X52 lite on cdrw for $38 with free shipping. Think of it as a $38 bezel with a free cdrw! There has to be a place that just sell's the bezels. It's a standard lite on bezel.
