I got the Optorite (magicspin) on sunday and I've very happy with it. My OM is still not out of the MagicSpin drives so there is no option of subbing for the PD. (Not that it really matters). Been reading about OM subbing HP DVD+R's for the KHypermedia ones so I headed there today and sure enough they were out of KHypermedia. When I asked about the HP sub they pointed me to some crappy looking "Value Spin" ( or something like that) media. They had it for $9.99 after $10 MIR. Same deal as the Khyper's. I wasn't interested. Looked like really generic. Needless to say I passed.

I got yet another PD drive today at my local OM! They still have 1 of the Khypermedia drive too, the trick is to show them a receipt of the PD priced at $79.99 from another Office Max and they will gladly sell you PD for same price. I picked up the last HP spindle as well, register shot out a $9.99 rebate form, making the spindle FAR!

811 or 851
have we come to a final decision on which is preferable.
i dont care bout a black bezel, i can always paint it, ive done it many times before.

LOL nice.

Why paint it when there's going to probably be another deal 2 months later? Seriously, it was just black Friday when they were selling 4x duals for $80 AR. Who knows what's just around the corner.

Maybe 8x dual format drives will be 80 AR just around the corner. I don't think we will see another REAL DEAL (non-substitute) deal like for many months to come.

I have compiled a listing of serial numbers/drive types posted here and on FatWallet. From what data has been posted, there does appear to be a pattern with the exception of the serial numbers for the black-bezel Lite-On. The 851S drives all have "51" or "52" as the fifth/sixth digits. The 811S have "45", "46" or "48" as the fifth/sixth digits. The 811S black-bezel have all been reported as starting with 43035100xxxx (the 851S with "51" are 431351xxxxxx or 481351xxxxxx). If you have a Lite-On DVD drive listed below with an incomplete serial number (ie. less than the first 7-8 digits), post the serial number and I'll update the list below.

Also include whether your drive has "8x DVDRW Dual Format IDE Kit" or "DVD Internal 8X Dual Rtl" listed above the serial number on the retail box, as this also appears to be a way of distinguishing which drive is which....

4323520135xx

U-30201-RV1

Got an LDW-851S

What media have you guys used with good success? I had trouble with the BenCo Platinum -R stuff from Microcenter. Wouldn't even burn, Nero would just hang after caching files...

Thanks!!

The Imation discs on sale this week at office depot work well with my 851s. If you want to burn them at 8X, you'll need to modify the firmware. EDIT: this link also shows which 8X media is supported by the official firmware.

If you live outside CA, you can pick up the Imations for about .70 each:

or if you're lucky, .45 each:

For those with beige drive and looking for black 1 solution is called paint. I have painted the
face plates of several cd-rw to match my black case and now just painted them red to match my red case.

Check this out! Me and my friends all checked the local OM's for the subs, but they were all out of stock. So during lunch yesterday we decided to stop my OD. We spoke to the guy there and we explained what was going on. They guy said he would PM with OM, so he called to confirm. So he called and OM told him that yes they did have the sale, but it was $50 instant and $50MIR. What they guy didn't tell him was about the sub. Anyways, we kept talking to the guy, but after hesitating he finally gave in. He had 2 in stock and it was 2 of us. My friend took one with serial starting with 48. The other one had a serial starting with 43. I was hesitant on the 43, so we only took the 48. Sure enough it was the Liteon 811s. I then made a copy of his receipt and called up another OD and they had 2 which we reserved (Friend). We went there 5 min after. Walked in and explained the situation and gave the Mgr. the receipt from the other store. Mgr called up the other store and that was all she wrote. No questions $79.99+tax out the door. They were both 43. What's funny is online there is a manufacturers rebate of $20 for purchases from OD. Not 2 Shabby!

Hooked Up!

Vinyl dye/vinyl color spray paint from an auto parts store works very well on plastic. Flat black color is a perfect match for other black components.

------

I finally opened both of my drives. I assumed that the 4323xxxxxxxx drive was an 811S, but it actually is an 851S just like the 4803xxxxxxxx drive I bought the day before. My PD 2 drives:
432352xxxxxx - 8x DVDRW Dual Format IDE Kit
480352xxxxxx - 8x DVDRW Dual Format IDE Kit

Another Sweet Deal.

Got the Liteon 851s at officemax for $80....
took receipt to Staples...they price matched same drive (pacific digital) to $80 plus a 25 rebate..total price $65!!!!!!!!!! (opended it up...Liteon 811s)

Which one should I keep.... 851s or 811s? I'll put the other in my bros. new system.

Mattlock

PS. already did a successful backup with the 851s using imation dvd-r.

Finally found a Lite-On sub at Omax (Lemont, IL) last one they had. CSR said that this drives are selling fast, not sure if they were getting any more.

Lite-On LDW-851S, serial# 430352012XXX , 8X DVDRW Dual Format IDE Kit, beige bezel. Drive is shorter (6 3/4") than normal ( 8 1/4").

:camera: ------- Lite-On (top), BTC (bottom)

Bought two (2) subs w/c were BTC DRW1800IM, last monday.

The guy at OM jut told me that next week they will have an "even better deal" for a Khypermedia DVD burner next week.... cheaper than $79.99. I am going to look at their site to see what drive that could be...

Edit: No Khypermedia DVD Burner found on their site.... Anyone have any experience with one of these?

It's probably the 8X DVD+R only drive that was in the ad a few weeks ago. A few people who picked it up said it was a Cyberdrive.

Most stores were out of the Khypermedia, which led to many of us getting subbed the dual format IOMagic instead.

Of course, subbing the IOMagic that week led them to be out of it this week, causing the PD to be subbed.

The PD being subbed will probably cause another chain reaction further on down the road

I went to OfficeMax to try to grab this drive and there were none of the original or the PD drives in stock. Ah, did anyone have success in the Portland, OR area?

I also tried to get OfficeDepot to PM to OfficeMax but they called because the pricematch was too great from 160>80 and then they got an incompetant lady on the phone so I was denied on that count too. Anyhow, they didn't have stock of the drive so I probably wouldn't have gotten the pricematch anyhow. Any ideas Portlanders?

K-squared, nice list. Makes me wonder is the fifth and sixth digits of the serial number represent the week of manufacture, and maybe the fourth digit is the year of manufacture.
