i called my Office max and they told me they were offering the sub. but they were out of both of em. she told me to try back mid week. i got the magic spin but i would rather not deal with rebates, and a liteon would be nicer. but now i have a new toy and i want to play with it damn it. (btw. this was the OM in North Haven CT)

would somebody shed some light on the difference between the 811 model and the 851? I understand that 811 has a bit setting? What does that do exactly?

I Went to one of my OMs here in Scottsdale, AZ and they were out period. No substitution was offered to me so I asked fo it, but I was told that they don't do that here! So, not my lucky day I guess.

So if I want the Lite-on what exactly am I looking for when I grab the box? Can I tell from the outside or do I have to open...and then what?

The seriel numbers on my box started with 4313 PN: is U-30201 if that helps. On the drive itself it says LITE-ON IT CORP. Model LDW 811s. Beige color.

Scored one at OM in Emeryville, CA. They were out of the Magic so they gave me a Pacific Digital.
Box also had the same serial numbers as uo7 mentioned.

Hi,

I got the Pacific Digital. Haven't opened the box.

The sticker on the side says "PN: U-30201".
The serial # goes 4303...
Below the UPC, it says 'U-30201-RV1".

Based on posts from people that got a Liteon, this doesn't look like one, right?

I think the only thing that matters is the serial doesn't start with a P.

serial #: Pxxxx..(1st character is P) =BTC
serial #: 4xxxx(1st character is 4) = Lite-On
part number is the same for both models
So you should have a Lite-On.

No...that would be the LiteOn 812s drive that burns both +R and -R @ 8X. Not sure if the 811s or 851s will be firmware upgradable (or hackable) or not.

8X DVD+R
4X DVD-R
4X DVD+RW
2X DVD-RW

I got one at the Kalispell, MT store for $79.99 out the door, no tax for us. They were also out of the khypermedia discs and were substituting HP 25 packs for $9.99 with no rebate. Got three packs of discs, and a pacific digital dual-format drive for just under $110.00. Great Deal!

Even Better, you did know the HP 25 pack is on the Rebate book? You just got one of those for FREE!

My Serial # is 481351XXXXXX and it's also a Lite-On 851S. Looks like serial #'s beginning with 48 are 851 drives, Serial #'s beginning with 43 are 811 drives. I believe that the 851 drives replaced the 811 drives, but I don't know whether they're any better. Mine has a manufacture date of 12/03.

I would also be interested in knowing which one is better.

Bit setting is creating a DVD+R disc, but when writing the lead-in the burner puts in the code for a DVD-ROM instead of DVD+R. This allow for greater compatability in older players that can't/won't read +R discs. From what I read, one of the lite-on drives does not do this. I don't know which one though, it was only referred to as lite-on.

To sum it up quickly, bitsetting allows a burned DVD to be seen as a DVD-ROM, instead of a
DVD+R(W). This supposedly enhances compatibility greatly with stand alone DVD players. This is of course a simplified explanation. To find out more detail, try the forums at:

Here

and

Here

and do a search. They talk about it extensively for various different model burners. It is my understanding that it is available for most single format DVD+R/W drives (with firmware updates) and only a few dual format models (NEC 1300A, some Liteon possibly, so far, again after firmware updates).

It is my understanding that bitsetting is only applicable to DVD+RW format drives, as DVD-R/W burners hardcode the bit in question, whereas it can be set in DVD+R/W burners. Someone supposedly came up with a workaround/hack for DVD-R, but the prevailing question from many was "Why bother?", as most players recognize DVD-R/W already. Again, reading one of the full discussions would probably shed more light on this as my knowledge is woefully incomplete.
