Picked up a Lite-on drive as well, but they ran out of the dvd-rs, both the advertised and subs.

Anyone know why this deal is really HOT, aside from the fact that you don't have to wait for the rebate?

::edit::
BTW - what's the difference between the 811s model vs the 851s model?

Typically, yes....most likely because the -R is (or has been) cheaper than the +R. I've read stories that one is better than the other...there was an article around (technical) that said that +R was leaps and bounds better than -R. YMMV!

Was the second digit in the SN a "8"? Just to confirm that "48" translates to 851.

Just picked one up, got the PD. Serial is 43xxx, found a Lite-On 851S inside. Also got PowerDVD XP and Sonic My DVD 4.0. No blanks, damn!

Same question, what's the difference between 851 and 811? The only link I could find was this -- http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=82989

My serial# was 43 ... and it was a 811s.

Why don't you open it? If you really don't like it take it back within 14 days

BTW, thanks to the OP and everyone else who contributed! I also find it hard to believe anyone questioning the "hotness" of this deal... come on ppl, $80+tax OTD with no rebates!!! Even if you can't firmware upgrade to 8x -R, this is still hot...

Oh yes, anyone have a good site for media compatibility for the 851S? Thanks!

Good luck to those that haven't scored yet!!

I got it! The Officemax in Norman, OK was out of the MagicSpin and they fixed me up with the Pacific Digital 8X DVD drive for 79.99 + tax. When I got it home and opened the box it was a Lite-On LDW-851S with Sonic MyDVD and PowerDVD but no blank media. They would only sell me one but I went back later in the day and tried to get another one but they where out. The manager offered to order me one and even ordered me the Pacific Digital 8X DVD Drive for 79.99 + Tax! Also I got a 25pack of HP DVD+R blanks for 9.99 out the door because they where out of the Kypermedia DVDS. I have never been treated so good at an OfficeMax!

What's so bad about the BTCs? In particular considering that they are $80 OTD?

Ok, i just got 2 from the Van Nuys store.. they had 10 left around 730pm.. Talk to a Patrick (manager) and he will hook you up if any left.. rang at $79.99 + $8.60 local tax =$ 86.59

I did have to bring someone along to get 2 .. as it was stickly 1 per customer per visit per day

Good luck guys, and many thanks to the OP !!!

btw: both serial #'s start with 4 for Liteon's

I'm wondering the same thing. Does anyone have an answer as to why the BTC is so bad??????????? I can't find anything on Google with any major complaints!

[edit]
Here is some info/reviews I found:
http://www.cdfreaks.com/article/133/ (this is for the 4x model...the 8x should be the same though)

BTC Firmware Updates
BTC Media Compatibility

Basically - the BTC isn't too bad a drive except that it can be picky as to the media it will burn good discs with. Oh, and by the way...apparently this drive will support bitsetting with the 0047 beta firmware - 0048 doesn't support it though.
