overburning can damage cd burner?

nero says overburning can destroy a cd burner possibly...
but if a cd passes the "nero cd speed" overburn test for a certain time... say 85 minutes for an 80 min cd. then is there still a chance the cd burner could be destroyed?

Yes it does say this, but I've never heard of a burner actually being damaged. Usually if you go past the limit the cd doesn't work. I've done overburing on yamaha, lite-on, hp, and samsung drives without any problems.

But as always do it at your OWN risk. YMMV I guess.

The only way that I could see this happening is if the laser went too far and went out of alignment.

But there is no way that you are going to get much more than 3-4mins overburned on a cd. The cd is still the limiting factor cause it is made for a certain amount of space and may be flexible with an extra minute or so usually. It really depends on what software you use to burn your data as well since different software creates larger table of contents.
