Can both be had ?

I need to build a PC that need to be very quite and at the same time need to overclock the CPU (Graphics does not matter as this is for a number crunching job) . Thinking about getting the 2700K and pushing it to 4.0 Ghz.

Has any one done a setup like that ....what case and MB would you recommend.

Thanks

Jay

easiest way is water with a massive radiator. usually overclocking and quiet are mutually exclusive.

Yes.

Get a known "quiet" case like a Fractal Design Define R3 or Antec Solo.

You probably mean Core i7 2600K (there is no 2700K at this time). 4GHz is easy on one of those. Use a known low airflow CPU cooler like the Scythe Ninja 3 (SCNJ-3000) or Thermalright HR02. Actually, at 4GHz probably any tower cooler with 3+ heatpipes will work. Just set the fan to under 800RPM and most people would consider it really quiet. CPU can easily take running up to the mid 80°C range under full load.

Not with Sandy Bridge and a measly 4GHz.

When you say very quiet it's tough. It's personal preference what people consider "quiet". I've been a silencing OCD'r for a few years now.

That said, I originally ran 4.6GHz on my 2500K, but have settled in at 4.2GHz. An AMD 6950 sits inside as well. I have 3 case fans (scythe and noctua) and a 212+ on top of the CPU all in a R3 fractal case. All my fans run @ ~800 rpm using EIST when idle. It is what I consider extremely quiet, but not silent. My temps never go above ~62c when primed (~22C ambient), however, my fans climb to 1200rpm via speedfan and then it is no longer quiet, but not loud in any way. Fans are soft-mounted and my HDD is suspended as the fractal is weak in isolating vibrations from "case attached" devices.

The Antec SOLO and P180 series is quite a bit quieter, but looks a little aged imo.

Essentially the fans stay @ 800rpm until I really load the CPU.

Yes, 2600K.

I am thinking about Antec KÜHLER H₂O 620 and Antec P183 V3 for Case. Will use SSD so the only noise is from the Fans.

Thanks

yeah but your gpu's are going to be louder then anything in your system, provided you got a high class gpu.

So the question was answered more for the GPU sector..

To answer your question... silence + overclocking possible.
Yes its very possible.. its called using a lot of mass in heat sinks with heat pipes, or changing mediums all together like water.

And if u want super quiet... ive tried passive air b4.
And well, its not recomended, not unless u want to spend watercooling prices.

I am not looking at high end GPU. The box is for software development and i need a high CPU to speed up compile times. In fact the worst part is I am going to use only one core

This makes it really simple. In fact the max Turbo is already at 3.8GHz so you are already at spitting distance from 4GHz for a single thread.

You can go quieter with something like a Thermalright HR02 instead of an Antec Kuhler.

Yeah i agree with zap.

Or a big heat pipe cooler with a low spin fan would even win in your scenario then.
