Hey guys,

Just a quick question, I have an AMD Athlon 2600 XP+ Barton running
at 1.9Mhz on an Asus A7N8X-X motherboard. In the bios I can only change FSB from 166 to 200. Is there anyway to change the FSB to 187 or any value between the 2 defaults?

Also I have 786 PC 3200 DDRam which can operate at 200Mhz. BUt since my CPU FSB is set at 166 should i set my ram to 166 as well to get a 1:1 ratio or leave it as 166:200 ratio? Thanks

Kinjo

Set "System Performance" to "User Defined" then check the other settings available selections. Voila.

Thanks that worked! NExt question is wut kind of temperature would you consider stable? I'm at 50 degrees Celsius right now? Any suggestions?

I'm sure you've read nothing but success stories from people that have OC'd their bartons to blazing speeds. Well just so you don't feel alone, I have a 2500 Barton that I simply cannot OC over 185 MHz on the FSB. It's not a heat issue, just a stability one for me. As for your temps, I wouldn't want to see it much higher than 50C... Is that under a load or not?

if it makes you feel better i got my 3000+ to run at 2.4 ghz stable (theoretical 3400+) I had to increase the voltage to 1.725. My temperatures were 48 in bios, and 53-54 under load. My fsb is 200 and my multiplier is 12. I do however have a thermaltake volcano plopped on that cpu.

cheers...

*edit*
dont get your temperature above 65. anything below that is acceptable.

I too couldn't reach 200MHz FSB until I found out why: Some boards, though totally capable of running 200FSB with a CPU rated for and totally capable of running the same FSB are unstable with other CPUs that are also capable of 200MHz FSB simply because their default FSB is lower. This can be proven with the pin-mon or L12 trick. For instance, my Mobile Barton 2400+ IQYHA stepping unlocked CPU could not do 200FSB in my Shuttle SN45G XPC even when vastly underclocked. Memtest86 would give me errors immediately. Dropping a tiny little wire in my CPU socket to get it to default to 166 or 200MHz FSB fixed it entirely. Setting the FSB to 200 and defaulting to 200 should acheive the same results, but they do not! This is clearly some obscure timing thing that NF2 chipsets adjust based on a CPU's default FSB and it simply gets too far out of tolerance as you set the FSB higher. Mobile Bartons default to 100MHz FSB in a board that does not recognize them! Overclocker boards like the NF7-S and A7N8X-E can easily do 200FSB without the pinmod/L12 trick but they actually get higher FSB overclocks WITH it (ie, may top out at 240MHz without, 250MHz after trick).

And yeah, treat 55-60C as the maximum temperature. Try to keep it under or around 50C unless you're going for an extreme overclock.

I've been running my Barton 2500 at 3200 speeds with max temps of 65C on stock cooling for +1 year now. No need to aim for <50C.

I have it set close to 2.1 gigahertz (approx 3000 specs) with steady temp around 50. Going to leave it there for safety. Thanks guys for the help!

I believe the Max temp per AMD specs is 60C (it's been a long time since I looked that up, but that's what I have my temp alarm set for). However, as a previous posted stated, he runs at 65C and all is well.

Czroe - Interesting post... you've got me thinking... My 2500 Barton was of the locked variety, so I put in the "speed strip" to get to the multiplier, but that little device did not default my FSB to 200MHz. I'm running on a DFI LanParty NF2 Ultra Rev A, with a Thermaltake Xazer CPU fan, and Corsair TwinX DDR 400 LLPT in Dual Channel. I was always sure that my memory wasn't the limiting factor as it is underclocked and although this Xaser is as loud as a jet, it did keep my temps under 60C when I messed with the mulitplier & core voltages. I may look into the wire trick and see where that gets me - I've been itching to pull the trigger on an Opty 165 anyway.
