Overclock corrupted windows??? HELP!

I successfully overclocked my 2500+ barton to 200mhz x 10.5 and it was stable. I wanted to go a bit further so I tried 200mhz x 11. It didnt boot into windows so I increased the voltage to 1.7. I rebooted and it went into windows fine. I ran a Prime95 test and it froze so i rebooted. I lowered my settings back to 200 x 10.5 but it wont boot into windows now!!! Like the windows loading screen comes up but just before i get into the login, it reboots. I restored the original 2500+ settings and the same thing - reboots before login!!!

Help me please! I really hope i didnt kill anything!

Did you try clearing CMOS?
Your motherboard will a jumper that clears CMOS. Look into the manual to find out where it is, and how to do it.

Yup. I cleared the CMOS and i get the same results -- reboots before windows login. (note that it does load windows, but reboots after the loading screen disappears)

what motherboard are you using? you might have corrupted your HD if you don't have a PCI lock.

Sorry i forgot to mention my specs:
2500+ Barton
abit nf7-s (v.2)
512 PC2100 ram (266)

I believe the abit nf7-s board has the pci locked at 33. And i also have the memory locked at 266 too!

Tried Last known good config? safe mode? You can run chkdsk/r/f too. If that doesn't work it may be time for a re-install.

I tired the "last known config" - still no good! I know that the PCI bus is locked. I dont know how my hard drive could have been corrupted.

what kind of cooling are you using?

Just the retail heatsink/fan. The temps don't go beyond 45 celsius in the bios. And from reading other posts, many users were able to go even further than 3200+ using the retail heatsink/fan.

there's your problem buy a better cooling than the stock cooling

well I'm overclocking my Athlon 1700+ to 2.4Ghz and I need Super cooling!
temperture must be under 40 idle if you want a stable system when overclocking!

I totally agree that the more cooling, the better. But i cant even get into windows at the STOCK 2500+ speeds! It loads windows but just before the login screen, i get a reboot. And it's a hard boot too since the hard drives spin down and spin up again.

You might have corrupted some WinXP system files.

If you have a WindowsXP startup disk, you could use that to get inside Windows. Once you're inside, you can copy the system files from your CD into your Windows folder. The files to copy would be:

Ntdetect.com
Ntldr
Boot.ini

Your Boot.ini file can be created using Notepad and saving it as an .ini file. This is what your Boot.ini should look like assuming you're not dual-booting with any other OS:

[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\windows="Windows XP"

If this doesn't work, you could reinstall which is a pain in the a$$.

I was playing around with the same ideas like you and it turned out my RAM timings was a bit too agrgressive. Increase the volts to the DDR and "reduce" the timings to a slower speed and see what happens. I got so many blue screens I can't count. But I was still abl to boot into windows eventually at now 204 x 11 with 1.725v.
You have PC2100 so perhaps use something like 3 4 4 8.

To avoid hosing windows when pushing the FSB and ram timings you can boot into memtest86 and run test 5 first. When memtest86 opens up press c-2-5-5-enter-enter to just run test 5. If it passes a couple times its probably safe to go into windows and run prime95.

Running PC2100 at 200mhz is not so safe, to say the least. If all fails, just pop in the xp cd and run a repair.

I don't know of that many people who got 3200+ using the retail cooler. Best to drop it to 2 Ghz or even lower for the time being just to be safe.

depends on stepping you have to make sure you know what stepping these people were claiming ran at high speeds with stock cooling.

yeah i've corrupted windows a few times in the past week or two

now i use a bootable memtest86 cd to be sure the system is atleast stable enough to not corrupt anything while windows is loading

i suggest when you fix windows that you make one of these

just do a repair of windows with the cd (win2k or winXP)

also be carefull cause bios can corrupt (to where clr cmos don't work) too if you push things too far
i've corrupted 2 on my P4 system and 3 on my athlon system

hard drives can corrupt easily and I think your best bet is to do a chkdsk,save what you want,format,then do a fresh install.

try "Optimummind's" solution ,, it works also ,,, if you NEED to recover files.

other wise it's not worth it ... just do a new install

simply stick xp cd in, and install over windows, all your settings will remain not as good as a fresh install, but best you can get away with.

First, thanks for all your posts! In regards to the ram, when i clock the bus to 200mhz, i set the ratio to 6/4 so the ram is still at DDR266 and PCI is 33mhz.

Just to be sure, the hard drive corrupts only when messing with the ratio and taking the PCI higher than 33mhz. Is this right?
