Overclock kills win 2000?

Here's the scoop: I'm running an Athlon 900 "classic" on an Abit K7-100 MB. I was able to crank it up to 967mhz (no GFD) and use win98 fine. Windows 2000 however would load about 80% (blue bar get over halfway across on splash screen) then do a memory dump. I tried different speeds and win2000 crashes even if I set the cpu to 101(33)x9=909mhz. Win2000 ONLY likes 100(33)x9=900. When it crashes it gives the error (most of the time) in a registry string, something like: HKey_LocalMachine/classes/SOFTWARE and that's it, no actually specific thing in that registry string.. Then it does a physical memory dump. A few times I would get an error with the ntkernel.

Win98 handles the overclock ok at any speed up to 972mhz.

Any ideas on what it's hiccup is with. Is it the memory, or something else. Memory is Micron pc100.

W2K is definitely more picky when it comes to overclocked cpu's. But I'm not sure if it should be that sensitive to an increase of 1 fsb. If you have access more than one stick of memory, try different cominations of them. Otherwise it might be that you have a chip that don't like OC'ing(?)

My system does the exact same thing so I finally decided to run winME. IF I run anything above an 83MHz front side bus then win2k won't make it past the same spot you are haveing problems. With win98 & ME I can run stable with a 100MHz Front side buss.

With my system, an ABIT BX6 R1 with a slocketIII and a CeleronII 566. I think the problem is a combination slocket/processor/motherboard bios. When I was running my celeron 300@450 (100MHz FSB) I didn't have these problems. I think the ultimate problem is that ABIT is to F*** lasy/cheep to issue a new bios for the motherboard.

I'll try a stick of pc133 ram I have in my other machine and see if it likes that better.

Could be your RAM. I Run a dual boot 98SE-2000 system, and 2000 runs fine at my specs below.

What do you have your RAM set at on the KA7? Since the board has the ability to run the RAM at 133MHz+ (Host CLK + PCI CLK), and RAM prices are at a very reasonable level, I suggest that you get some good quality PC133.

Thanks for the help guys. It was the memory. I popped in a 133mhz mem chip, set the mem settings to HOST CLK, wouldn't do (HST CLK + PCI CLK), and now it's running at 1 gig.
