What the hell? The dialog pops up at login and says my hardware has changed significantly. When I try to reactivate it tells me I have already used that key and need to buy another.

Anyone seen this happen before?

Sounds like Windows thinks that you upgraded your processor. Call Microsoft and they will probably give you another key if you are polite about it. Yelling at them (no matter how good it makes you feel) is never good. I got them to open up 2 office 2003 licences for me once.

Yeah, every bit of hardware in the box is the same, so Windows must be reacting to the higher clock speed, although that is farking silly.

I'll call them, and beg I guess.

No begging required. You are allowed unlimited activations on that key assuming that it's still installed on the computer it came with and that it's not installed on more than one computer.

Just explain what happened. It's no big deal.

Thats right, just call, no begging required, just be polite.

Its just a job to the person you are talking to and they don't want to listen to BS.

Yeah, I can confirm that. I called on a Sunday morning. Sounded like I got some nice Dutch kid . He reactivated me in five mins, no hassles.

So did he think that was odd at all that an OC required reactivation or did you even elicit a comment from him?

I tried, but it became apparent that he really just wanted me to follow the script. He did ask me how many machines this copy of Windows was installed on, and I told him one. Then we did the "read and repeat 23000 numbers" thing, and we were done. I am assuming that after the OC windows thought it was on a new box because the processor speed was different.
