I have generic Kingmax PC100 RAM running in my Abit KT7 Raid w/Duron. I'm a bit confused about the different RAM specs. I certainly see the need for super-fast RAM if you are o-clocking a P3-700 to 1050 MHz, or whatever. For the life of my system, I'll be running a 100 MHz system bus. Then again, my memory scores in Sandra are poor, so I'm wondering if I should upgrade.

So, how much of a difference does CAS 2 vs. 3 really make? And is it possible to get PC100 RAM that does CAS 2, to save a little money?

Skorpion1G is selling Mosel rev. 2 RAM for $88 shipped in the FS forum. For the same price (AccessMicro rapes you for shipping, so there's only about $1 difference), I'd pick the Mosel. (It's 7ns, rated at 143mHz CAS2)

Yes you definitely can get cas 2 ram @ 100 mhz...but you don't necesarily have to buy it...there is a good chance that your pc100 ram can already do cas 2...Memory is a lot like cpus, the manufactorers set a clock speed on it and they guarantee it stable at the speed but their is a good chance it can go higher. I have 3 random @ss pieces of memory (128+96+32) from a 3 diff. sources, some new(cheap), some old (also cheap stuff gotten free somewhere) and they all do cas2 no problem but they are only rated cas 3...Cas 2 definitely does make a nice performance difference...using 3dmark people with scores around 5000 or so report an increase in 200-300 pts...not enough i would say to run out and spend 50 bucks on new memory but nice enough to try to get using your current memory...give it a whirl in bios and see if it works...cas2 and all those other ras and cas memory stuff just has to do basically with how long/many memory delays/charging/latency so the smaller the number 2 being shorter than 3) the faster the speed (significantly) but this can also hurt stability if the mem can't handle it (in this case just bump cas back to normal no harm done)...

But I want to get this RAM cuz it sounds like a really good deal. But I'm not sure if it's compatible with my motherboard. I have a FIC 503+ I believe. Is there a website that I can goto that will tell me? I want this memory because I'm thinking about upgrading soon so I'll transfer this stick over to the new motherboard/cpu. Thanks alot.

They won't try to rip you off. And they have GOOD customer service.

BTW it's not CAS2, it's rated 3,3,2 by Kingmax, But it will run @150 2,2,2.
