overclocking 9700pro

I used AtiTool to find a safe overclock and set my 9700pro to 375/340. Everything ran fine, but I am not even sure if I could see a difference. Far Cry seems to run a little smoother, trouble is when the action gets heavy I forget to look. So I am left with question is overclocking this card worth the possible shortened life?

I have tried overclocking my 9700 Pro, but have never found the benefits noticeable in actual gameplay.

I have to overclock my 9700 non pro to run FarCry smoothly with everything on very high and ultra high. I am only getting 345/292. I have got some real crappy ram on this card.

got my pro up to 428/352 but that was with both vmem and vcore mods...

Sometimes it's not just the card that is limited. Your system counts a big deal. Try that too. Overclocking them together should be noticeable.

unfortunately the 9700p has a less than stellar history of overclocking well... while i've seen some nice gpu clock increases when using better gpu coolers, for the most part the mem has not seemed to have much success, tho as with any other overclocking, YMMV.

You don't "see" any tangible benefit to o/cing because there isn't any.

Viewable to the naked eye, that is.

I overclocked my 9700 Pro to 360/660 And I only go about 440 points in 3DMark2001SE and Aquamark3. Very little performance increase for such a pretty good overclock. I have made some calculations and, for every MHz you increase in the core you gain about 9 points, and fore every MHz you increase in the VRAM you gain about .9 of a point. Not that much but something.

I disagree with the statement that there aren't any tangible benefits to overclocking. I can tell a difference, especially in games like UT2k4, when there is a lot of action on the screen (lots of enemies/vehicles in Onslaught mode). The extra few FPS helps keep slowdowns to a minimum in those situations, which can make the difference between fragging and getting fragged.

Well, although one overclocked component or optimization may not make a big difference, a bunch sure will. In any case, taking whatever performance you can get is a good way to go about it. Even if something like say fast writes only provides a fraction of a frame or like AGP 8x providing 1 frame and a half. That fast write and AGP have now given you 2fps, and in conjunction with all other performance enhancing tricks, you maybe be able to get 10fps-15fps, which is a decent increase.

I got the first shipment to the USA...
You need get better cooling thats all....

You WONT get a good OC on the stock coolers.
(they werent attached properly ... the shim causes problems)

Been running mine 360/340 since I got it. (no volt mods)
(after fixing the cooling... on core and DDR)

i stand by what i stated. sure, there are exceptions; as with overclocking anything, YMMV. but you won't see common overclocks of 50-75 MHz on the core or 100-150Mhz on the memory as you do with 5900's (with stock cooling).

my 9700p and 9800p both have arctic cooling vga silencers on them, and my oc results aren't uncommon from the feedback i've had on various fourms. i also stated that i had seen some decent oc's on the gpu...

overclocking can help a great deal on raising minimum frame rates

and as i discovered with my 4200, changing a decent card into an awesome one
without an OC, it can play joint ops at 1024 only with low details
after, i bump everything but shadows to hi, and get 40-50fps, which is fine for me

so OC the $hit outta it if you can
