Overclocking a Pentium 4 3.0C

I'm looking to overclock my system a bit to gain some performance. I'm not looking for a really big overclock, just a steady overclock to improve performance. I know I would have to overclock the RAM to in order for it to run at the same ratio with the FSB being a higher frequency in addition to the clock speed. So, how well would PC3200 Corsair XMS RAM overclock above 200MHz (400MHz DDR)? I'm looking to set the FSB to 225 and no higher so that would be an effective 900MHz quad pump FSB for the CPU), the RAM 225MHz (450MHz DDR) and the CPU would be 3.375GHz. Is that kin dof an overclock very likely to achieve? I just bought a new ABIT IC7-G motherboard which I've heard is supposed to be good for overclocking? Would that overclock give a big increase in performance and would the Corsair XMS PC3200 (DDR 400MHz) RAM likely be able to reach 225MHz (450MHz DDR) at a stable setting while not overheating? ANd would I need significantly better cooling, or just a little bit more cooling in my system?

Help greatly appreciated.

The motheboard and CPU shouuld have no trouble with that overclock, even with the intel heatsink. The ram may or may not make it to 225, but likely will. You may have to relax the timings a bit to get the ram stable. What kind of PSU do you have? I wouldn't recomend trying an overclock if you have a weak or generic PSU as you will likely run into problems. I also recomend running memtest overnight, and then prime95 for about 12 hours to make sure it's rock stable with the overclock.

In case you fail to overclock the RAM, 2 ways to go. First you can set the RAM and FSB to work in an asynchronous mode in BIOS, which mean you don't have to overclock the memory together with the CPU. Secondly, if you seek better performance, use some DDR500 or even higher speed memory.

Would I need a new fan and heatsink for the northbridge chipset on the motherboard to keep it cool at 225MHz? And I don't want to run the RAM asychronous with the FSB as that would really hurt performance for a Pentium 4 system unlike the Athlon 64 with the hyper transport bus. That's what I've heard anyway. How much would I have to relax the RAM timings for Corsair at a 225MHz (DDR 450MHz) overclock? Would I need new heat spreaders for the Cprsair XMS RAM in order to keep it cool, or are the default heat spreaders it came with good enough?

Also forgot to ask, how much of an improvement does overclocking the FSB on an intel 875P chipset help in addition to the CPU internal clock being overcloked as well? I know you have to overclock the FSB in order to raise the CPU internal clock speed on Intel CPUs because the multipliers are locked, but I'm just curious to know about the exiting potential for a faster FSB in addition to a faster CPU? For instance, would having an overclocked Pentium 4 to say 3.375GHz with a FSB of 225MHz (920MHz QUAD pumped) be a significant advantage over say a Pentium 4 3.375GHz stock speed with a stock 200MHz FSB (800MHz QUAD pumped)? In other words, does increasing the FSB really improve the system performance, or is almost all the performance gain just from the increased CPU internal clock frequency when performing an overclock as long as it runs very stable of course?

In reference as to will the OC'd cpu run faster overall as a system, Yes.

newer ic7-g rev has nice northbridge with fan already.

try oc with 1:1. if unstable, set cas/timings by +1.

At 225mhz, corsair ram may need a lot of juice so bump up your vmem in softmenu.

Assuming you have 3.0 cpu, you should easily hit 3.375 but if unstable then you may also need to up vcore besides vmem.
