Overclocking a Radeon 8500DV.

I just bought a new ATI Radeon 8500 All in Wonder card for my machine. I figured that it would be a little lower powered than the regular 8500, but not this much!

Engine = 229.5mhz
Memory = 190.13mhz

That seems very under-powered! I have "Powerstrip", so I have the ability to change my clock speeds, but I need to know if anyone knows what kind of clock speed would be safe to use with this card. I don't know whether it can operate at the regular 8500 speeds, and I certainly don't want to fry this rather expensive card.

any input would be great.

The tv tuner generates a lot of heat. It will not clock far from what I have heard. Push it until you get artifacts/lockups and then back off. If ya get a bad clock, and it freezes, hit reset and it will go back to normal settings. If ya wanted a gaming card, ya should have got a 8500 reg. You could always pop in a decent pci card for games....

I thought the 8500 AIW was 230/230 not 230/190. I sure could be mistaken but that just doesn't seem right.

well, that would be okay if it were, but Powerstrip reads it at 230/190(380 DDR).

you need to check out how fast your RAM is, I believe the DVs don't use the 3.6ns ram the normal 8500s do. You might have to add RAM sinks or something.

Yes they are clocked at 230/190. You should get 250/200 out of it.... most are.

8500DV 230/190 5.5ns ram
8500LE 230/230 4ns ram
8500OEM 250/250 3.6 or 4ns ram
8500Retail 275/275 3.6ns ram

A little off topic, but Darkhsun, or anyone else with an ATI All in Wonder 8500DV:

Would you be willing to zip up or ISO the ATI installation CD for me? I'm helping a friend with his installation and for some reason the CD he received won't read.

Well my card is running currently at 287/220 with no problems. I'd try higher for the core, but for some reason Powerstrip won't let me.

I'm also somewhat skeptical about the 287MHz core setting as from the threads I've read on ocing the 8500DV, most have only gotten it up to around the 250MHz range. Anyone know a way to verify if I'm actually running the core at 287MHz?

The memory clock seems to be more practical however (got heatsinks on the mem).

Which program , OS and driver are you using for your ocing? I am running it on Winxp using the most recent official driver (3286) and Poerestrip oc does not work. r3ds tweak does not work properly. unituner uses the same utility same I did not even bother ...

rage tweak won't work on the 8500, but powerstrip should. You can install the rage tweak to check the actual core frequency though.

Actually I got rage tweak to work on my system. The problem (I think) is the r6probe (setclk) insists that my card's pll has a maximum frequency of 350 (the radeon 8500dv is already running at 230/380). It does not allow me to do anything unless I underclok the memory to somthing less than 350. (I can set the core/mem to 300/348 and it runs - verified by powerstrip). It is useless.

Powerstrip just does not work for me (I know a lot of people claiims that it works for 8500dv). System lockups once I change the clock (even if I try to underclock) I don't know what happened and it does not work for me.

Double-click the icon below the clock slider in PowerStrip and you can adjust the clock range...
